Good Remedy For Fishy Smelling Hands

Featured Replies

After long days handling stinky cut bait and lots of fish while saltwater fishing, I have always hated the stink of fish slime on my hands. By trial and error, I think I've got something: toothpaste! Never heard of others doing this, but maybe they have. Lather up with the stuff for a minute, and the scent is majorly diminished. Try it some time, and I hope it works for you as good as it has for me.

With a moniker like that you should only be handling crabs, vinegar and lemon juice both work great.

I use soap and water. Works like a charm.

Soap and water never works as well for me.

I mix soap and toothpaste. It takes the smell away and isnt quite as rough on your hands as straight toothpaste.

I use some automotive grit soap. Works well. BTW, what is that fish in your avatar?

I just got a new fish cleaning board and it came with a metal stone of sorts that is suppose to remove the fish odor from your hands. I have seen them on TV before but haven't tried it yet to see if it works. Called Wonder Bar.

I have used toothpaste for years, but have recently switched to a wonder bar.

I've been using toothpaste for decades. It works very well when soap and water doesn't cut it, usually after a long day saltwater fishing using cut bait.

The wonder bar works surprisingly well but toothpaste is very effective also. Dishsoap and mechanics soap work well also. Lemon and lime juice work but they'll also find every cut or poke you got during your day on the water :jaw-drop:

I grew up in the fish business so I hardly notice the smell. After a day of using live or cut bait for saltwater fishing, a good washing is all I do, it doesn't remove the smell but it does dissapate in couple of hours. The only smell that is really offensive to me is barracuda, they stink like no other fish, and they have a terrible slime too..................but are they great to eat, not good to eat, but great!!

Once with soap and water doesnt work for me either. I just end up with vanilla citrus fish slime scented hands. Multiple washes are required. Will try the toothpaste.

I use a green scrubby pad and Dawn dish soap. Alot of the smell gets trapped by your fingernails too so I hit them with a scrub brush thoroughly. Works everytime the first time.

Toothpaste also works wonders polishing spoons and blades. Not so much with bass, as they don't seem to care, but trout won't bite a bitten bait. Toothpaste scrubs off the negative scent cues well. The stainless steel bars of "soap" work well, but you have to really scrub every inch of stink. slonezp has the best remedy, so far.
