Whats your favorite gear ratio for fishing jigs? Should I stay with a high for them?

I like High Speed reels for everything. I have no problem slowing it down, and I always have the speed if needed.

7:1, I like to be able to take up the slack when needed. also like it for pitching docks to be able to get the spoon or jig back out of the stall. Everything else is fine with 6:1 or there abouts.I do like 5:1 FOR dd22'S and 6 XD'S ... also pay attention to the IPT ,as it can vary from manufacturers

for deeper water, 20'+ i like a 7:1. for shallow water, 6"-10 a 6:1 does just fine.

I prefer 7.1:1 for all my jig fishing.

While 6.4 to 1 will work just fine, my preference is 7 to 1.

I think any of the 7.1:1 reels are great for jigs, I wouldn't use anything under a 6.4:1 as you want to get you jig into as many spots as you can.

My casting jig setup has a souped up Citica 201D with 7:1 gears.

The spinning setup which I use the most for jigs has a Symetre with 6.2:1 gears, but I believe it brings in ~32 IPT..

I have one not attached to a rod that is 5:3.1. I was going to make it a dedicated crank set up but I snagged a Bass Pro PQ in 4:7 so I will use it instead.

Around here and being shore bound, I don't have much cover to fish and until either changes, I hate to purchase another reel.

I don't own any 7's so I may be hurting myself, but have always found low sixes fine. Personally I find myself going from slow and fishing faster and faster, so anything to slow me down a bit helps. I'd say on average 5.8 to 7.1 is pretty solid. That said, in the winter, you could find some situations where a 5.0 is fine. And my 5500C3's with 5.3's are almost as fast as the Curado B 6.2 adn Citica 6.3's that I use anyway, in terms of inches per turn. All preference, but the 7.0 fellows have a point, assuming you can force yourself to work the bait slowly.

"Back in the day", plenty of fish were caught on reels that were in the 5's. I think way too much is made about gear ratio, just fish what you got. If you really need to take up more line at hookset, get a longer rod.
