I am sorry but I don't feel bad at all for the people out of a job......they chose this path and ultimately hostess called their bluff and now people are out of jobs.

That being said I am a tastycake guy myself in the rare times I eat sweets.

Wonder if that $88,000 bid can be canceled, don't really know the value of 11,000 twinkies but without the Hostess route that step van doesn't have a whole lot of value. Not being a step van expert but having experience in hauling heavy weights, a quick visual inspection of the picture tells me, the wheel base is short, tires too small and the body of the van is too low to the ground. I would doubt if the rear end ratio is adequate and the drive train (transmission and engine) is probably under powered. Offhand would not know what the GVW is, but step vans are not designed for towing or handling any kind of significant loads.

That said I've seen these things converted into campers, housing for the homeless and utility vehicles for electricians and plumbers, work nicely for those applications.

When I drove those trucks, they were diesel 4 speeds with governors set at 45mph. Bodies were aluminum and last forever.

The board approval of a nice compensation package for the CEO sealed their fate, maybe? There going to come a time where CEOs and Board needs to quit complaining about high labor costs and take a pay cut themselves to salvage the future of the company. (it probably never happen in my lifetime which is sad.) I'm curious to know what Hostess market share is, if Hostess has majority share compared to its competitors then their cost is out of control, if it in the minority side then they were failing all across the board. I know they are losing in the bread market in this area by a country mile. Wonder Bread brand is getting dominated by the Nature Own brand in this region.

Anyway, my dad works for its competitor and his bakery is on verge of a shut down. They laid off a 60 some employees and this news may have saved the bakery he works at..

Apparently the union was ticked that they took $10-$100 a week pay cuts, higher insurance and less retirement because the CEOs raised his salary last year from $700k to 2.5 million or something along those lines.

If you don't like it then become a leader and not follower. You don't want minimum wage, then get out of the kitchen. You want 700k, then gear up and play ball.

CEO can't raise it himself. Board of director gotta approve. I thought that was an asinine move by the board...can you imagine the conversation? CEO: "I created a net loss in previous year but due to my work ethics I deserve a raise." The board: "fair point. Here you go!" *roll eyes*

I've never understood how any board approves pay raises for upper level management when a company is going into the hopper, or worse, facing bankruptcy.

Having said that, if the CEO agreed to work for free, the money saved wouldn't come close to what it would take to save the company. It's no comment about fairness. It's simple reality.

So much for using the Twinkie defense for murder, lol.

Back in the day, on my way early in the morning to a fishing destination, I would stop at the 7-11 and pick up a Hostess fruit pie and a large coffee with cream and sugar. Man that was good stuff!

The old CEO is the one who got the raise. The CEO that took over in January didn't. He also changed the salary of the top four execs to $1 a year.

I'm sure someone will buy parts of the company, but restructuring and cost reductions

will be significant. The new owners could go with a 1099 program without ANY employee

benefits. Most likely, some of the facilities will be closed permanently.

That's what I heard as well.

I heard the Hostess brand will be bought almost immediately, therefore production will have very little disruption (unless of course all their employees decide to work elsewhere).

As CNBC and others have been reporting high sugar prices is one of the components that has lead to Hostess's financial problems. Some of the suitors are Con Agra, Flowers Food, McKee Foods (Little Debbie), along with South American company Tastycakes and having the inside track Grupo Bimbo. Bimbo had offered 580 million several years ago reported by Forbes the company may only be worth 135M now.
