Reel Recommendations

Featured Replies

Earlier I was asking in regards to a rod for fishing jigs. Now am curious with what all Shimano reel users have on their rods for jig fishing.

E5's to E7's, anticipate heaviest jig being 3/4 oz., shallow to deep waters. Rod length will be 7'3" to 7'5".

Will budget this to 300.00 for Shimano reel.

My jig rods have a Chronarch e7, a Metanium XG, and a Chronarch ci4+ on order.........

Something with fast line pick-up and that you like.  I am als playing with the new Pinnacle Optimus XiHS.  It has a flipping switch which I like, and is making a good first impression on me!

What's a Shimano?  Do they make reels?  I've heard of Pinnacles and Pfleugers, but ...

Yeah, they make reels for those who know no better. How's Lake Fork been lately ?

Actually used one of those Shimano's to pull out an 8 pounder out of there once.

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get back to Fork for the last couple of years.  I used a Pfleuger to pull out my PB from that lake, 7-11.  It's the photo in my Avatar.

Without the chronarch ci4 will be the best bang for the buck. Feels almost like my metanium.

Core 50MG if you find it on sale. Some guys have mentioned prices as low as $210.

Core 100Mg7, you can find them on an auction site for $300 shipped.

Scorpion 1000xt

Curado 50e

Curado 200e

Chronarch 50e

Core 50mg7

All of the above are on rods that I use for finesse jigs all the way up to 1/2 and 3/4 oz football jigs. I don't think there is a bad reel with your budget.

Did you settle on a rod yet or are you still sorting that out?

If you can find a core 50 for $210 jump on it for sure. I have seen them go as low as $240 used but rarely under $270 new in box.

Thanks fellows on your input. Seems there are plenty of options and can't really lose. Guess I wanted to feel comfortable with the choice. Chronarch E7 or Chronarch C4i?

So far seems id be going with a Dobyns Extreme 744 split grip. Recently ran into someone through work who can set me up with a TFO rod at reduced cost. Not familiar with them much but am with Mr. Loomis and his rods. Any thoughts on those rods?

Thanks Dave

TFO = buy the Dobyns.

Agree completely.  TFO isn't Gary Loomis' company and he doesn't build those rods.  I'm not sure how he is connected to them but my guess is, TFO paid him handsomely to use his name.  Go with the Dobyns.

There is a significant price difference among both of those rods. I have no personal experience with the new TFO rods nor do I know anyone that has. Keep in mind that Gary Loomis was the man behind the original G-Loomis rods. He has since started a new company called Edge rods... a very high end rod with limited model choices at the moment. I am not sure much on the history or involvement he had in the TFO rod lines. They may be a good rod at that price point but how they would stack up to GLX or Dobyns Extreme rods I am not sure.

The CI4 and E series chronarch reels are both fine choices. The CI4 may give you a few more benefits for the added cost... lighter in weight, more adjustable cast control system, and the micro gearing and x-ship advantage.

I've only held the TFO rods and I didn't like them. From what I've read they were a disappointment.
