What's Your Next Combo?

I'm thinking about upgrading my medium light finesse combo, I've been getting more into using an overall lighter setup and liking the results. It's versatile to where I can switch species and several techiques. It's pushing to be my next focused purchase.

So what's your next technique combo going to be?

  • I just sold all my Powells and am upgrading to Ducketts! Just ordered them yesterday! Very excited!!!! Gonna pair them with Lews Tournament Pros.

  • Glad you mentioned catfish.  I don't fish where a 5.x reel would be of use, but I do fish where decent size (for my area) catfish can be caught.  I have an old Abu 5001C from around 30 years ago that

Not in the market, have what ever I need and want to catch anything I target.

My next set up will either be a shimano compre 7'2" dropshot rod, with a pflueger president, or a 7'2" shimano Compre M/XF casting rod with a Daiwa T3B for light jigs... (shimano rod with daiwa reel i know it is weird but it just works)

I would like to get another Shimano reel and a longer  mh rod.  At least one that is 7' long.  That would be my dedicated pitching and flipping rig.

Beetlespin Rig

To be more specific, as soon I get my Calcutta 50 back from DVT it will go on the Loomis MBR782 that the big brown truck dropped off yesterday.

Dx 704 to go with my new t3

Shimano Cardiff 300a on a Okuma Guide Select 7'11" Heavy. I'm going to start throwing some big baits.

My next combos are going to be St. Croix Rages - HF and a spinning MXF

Another Cumara/Tournament Pro combo. This one, a 7'2" MH and spooled with 20lb flouro to fill the gap between the heavier 7'4"setup with 25lb, and the 7' with 17lb.

Swimbait rod. Maybe a 7'10" H/XF BPS Extreme or a 7'6" H/XF Carbonlite, or possibly the Fenwick Aetos in 7'9" H/XF. Whatever I get I'm probably going to put a Revo S on it.

Ordering a Denali Jadewood 7'11" Flipping Rod for throwing the Alabama Rig. Will put either Garcia Pro Max or Lew's Tournament Pro with Sufix Braid

I think personally I'm going to start with a jig setup, I have my eyes on a Dobyns Champion 734, with a Diawa T3 Ballistic 8.1:1. After that I am between getting a swimbait combo, which would most likely be a Okuma Guide Select with a Shimano Cardiff or Calcutta, or a spybait setup, which would probably be a Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth and a Shimano Symetre or a Stradic.

I don't know.... Really, I don't. I actually for the time being think I am all set..... Bwahaha..... Okay, so I can't even say that with a straight face. Probably going to be a Fenwick Elite tech smallmouth rod, if it's a spinning rod, it will be paired with a pflueger president spinning reel, and if it's a casting rod, I think I have to try a Lews reel.

I got 2 set ups I'm looking into getting. One is a Denali Kovert 7'8" flippin' rod paired with an old Quantum burner 7:0:1 that I have. The second is a Denali Kovert 6'10" medium crankbait rod that ill mostly use for jerkbaits. II'll probably pair it with a Lews Speed Spool.

I need to buy another cranking rod. I'm pretty set on a Dobyns 705cb glass which I will probably pair with either my Lews TP or TSS. From there I'll either be looking for a Dobyns Champ or Champ Extreme in a 3 power, more than likely, with another Lews TP.

I've got two combos that I'm not completely satisfied with.

1) I'll likely upgrade my big swimbait set-up to an Okuma EVX Musky Rod so I can triple duty that rod for musky/catfish/swimbaits/arigs.  7'6" HF Rod rated for 2-6 oz baits paired with a 6501 Abu with 65LB braid.  Should be good for all those applications.

2) I've got a St. Croix Premier that doesn't have a reel attached.  I don't have a dedicated cranking reel, so that's next.  I need a lefty 5.X reel.  Probably a Lews BB1.

Just received a Fuego 6'10" MXF spinning rod.  Will be putting a Supreme XT with braid on it.  Going to try light jigs and tubes on it.  However, as you know I seldom use a spinning rod.  Picked up a used 7' ML Crankin Stick.  Will be putting my other Carbonlite on it with 6# mono.  My first rod designated for cranking.  :teeth:

Bought a 7' MF Prodigy from the same seller.  He said it would make a good cranking rod.  Since I already had the same rod, I will be mounting  a Black Max 1600 reel with 6# Siege on both.  However, one will have upgraded bearings while the other remains stock (both will have Carbontex drags).  Will give me a chance to see how much difference bearings can make with gear that is as close a match as I can make it without having to switch reels on the same rod.

Glad you mentioned catfish.  I don't fish where a 5.x reel would be of use, but I do fish where decent size (for my area) catfish can be caught.  I have an old Abu 5001C from around 30 years ago that I never learned how to use at the time.  Now that I can use b/c reels with a modicum of success, I will have to mount it on a 7' Heavy (that had been advertised as MH :sad78: ), and see if any fun can be had at my local river.  They tell me 35 pounders have been caught there.  Been close to 50 years since I went after catfish.

I've seen some pigs here, we'll have to go out so I can show you some spots.

Shimano Sahara or Pflueger President to use as a multipurpose setup.  Not sure what rod I will pair with it yet, but not going to be anything over the top.  I have quite a few spinning setups, but they're all cheap.

Dobyns Champion 736 to replace my 735.

Daiwa Tatula 100hl for shallow/mid cranks.

Not using these together but I am purchasing together.

I might get a swimbait combo for next year. Probally a Calcutta and dobyns rod.

Geez Snook, thinking like that could throw the tackle industry into a deeper economic down swing.
