My old flipping reel finally fell apart and I need a replacement. I called Bass Pro and I said "Name off some of your high end flipping reels (with flipping switches)."

The guy said "There aren't any."

I was expecting there to be a Shimano, an Abu, a Diawa, and a Johnny Morris to choose from.

If there's no reels with flipping switches anymore.... what's everybody using??? Please offer brand/model. Thanks!!!!

You should try to find a Shimano Castaic. Very neat flipping switch design. I used a Team Lew's last year, but I have since upgraded to a Tatula type-R with a beefed up carbontex drag. Want to try the 8.1 out.

Did not know this....The Optimus has gotten nothing but raved reviews...so maybe you should check those out...!!!!

Any word on the Primus(sp?). I heard that was going to be their flagship reel.

There's no real need for a special reel to flip cast with. Flipping switches also tend to be weak links mechanically. I'd look for a light, small profile reel with good free spool and drag and there are lots of options.

I have reels with flipping switches, my old XLT PLUS series and a Black Max Abu have them, I´ve owned them for over two decades, in that time maybe 5 or 6 times I´ve activated the flipping switch. To do my flipping and I do it a lot I use my regular everyday 15+ reels and ..........well, I don´t even care if they have the switch cuz obviously I don´t need it to flip.

I never understood the point of the flippin' switch other than to have something else to break.

The point of having a switch? As the pitch is delivered, the lever "auto locks" your spool for instant hook sets if needed. My reel that broke gave me 10 solid years of flipping. The skin on my thumb gets enough of a workout stopping the spool on the other 5 reels.

Thanks to every one who answered.... maybe I need to give Pinnacle a shot. Are they decent reels? How do they compare to the Johnny Morris series?

You can manual press the thumbar up on all Daiwa reels, it isn't quite the same as a flipping switch but easily serves the same purpose.

No....it has twitching bar, completely different thing.

The quantum accurist also has a flippin switch. Daiwa's clutch engages if u flip the thumb bar back into place after a cast. It's what I do.

Quantum accursits has a switch.

Daiwa t3 or ballistic has the hood which makes a great flipping and pitching reel..just press the hood down with thumb and it engages the reel..

The older gray model of the Quantum Accurist has a flipping switch and several of the new models also have flipping switches.
