So I do some Redfishing as well as Bass and I usually wear a Colombia PFG shirt while I am out. These shirts are supposed to be moisture wicking and keep you cool. Truth is is that they don't breathe so it feels like the heat from my skin is staying trapped in the shirt. I also sweat like crazy in these shirts. My back gets drenched in sweat.

 

Where is the cool on these things? I don't get it. I am more comfortable with a long sleeve cotton shirt.

I am going to start wearing long sleeve white cotton from walmart. Wish someone made a longsleeve tshirt hoody.

I wear a generic "athelitic" shirt from Wal-Mart maybe? I can't even honestly remember where I bought it from. It's the same type of material as say underarmour.

I have had the same experience.  Went back to wearing the Columbia all cotton shirts.  The PFG was good for cool/cold weather, and that was about it.  Finally gave away the one I had.

I don't wear cotton fishing shirts anymore. I like the lighter, quick dry shirts with the vented back and long sleeves. I am much more comfotable and I like the front pockets.

I was looking at expensive, synthetic material summer shirts and passed on them because I wasn't sure the material would breathe. Thanks for the post, JellyMan!

Nab a dry fit shirt from wally world. Those things are awesome.

Sims does make what you are looking for, but it is costly.

I used to be under the impression that cotton is the best material for perspiration, but living in Florida

has changed my mind. Cotton is hydroscopic (absorbs moisture), and once cotton gets wet, it stays wet.

Synthetic materials like polyester and nylon are hydrophobic (repel moisture). Water vapor that isn't absorbed 

into the fabric is forced to remain in suspension where it can be expelled through strategic vents. 

Now I only fish with long-sleeve polymer sunshirts, but the key is finding a shirt with good ventilation.

We fish during the hottest time of day, but the heat rarely bothers me (but did when I wore cotton). 

A well-designed sunshirt will provide ventilation flaps along the flanks and across the cape of the upper back. 

The better shirts also incorporate a mesh-lining of synthetic fabric to storehouse the moisture until it's bellowed out. 

 

In addition to repelling moisture, polyester repels dirt better than cotton and is less prone to wrinkling.

Although it's not as popular as polyester, nylon is stronger and lighter than polyester and also offers a little stretch.

Stretch is a nice feature when you're wrapped around the gunwale lipping a bass. 

Columbia makes quality shirts, especially their 'Silver Ridge' & 'Airgill' lines.

I'm right with you.  I've tried all kinds of synthetic wicking shirts and burn up in them, I prefer cotton over anything.

I've got a couple of long sleeve Cabelas Guidewear shirts (long sleeve) that I like for summer fishing.  I just recently got a Columbia set of Shirts & shorts that works good also.  I like the button up shirts with pockets rather than the knit ones.

 

What I've started doing the last few years is changing clothes after I'm done fishing.  Fish, sweat all day, take out, put away your stuff and the last thing I do is to change clothes.   Fresh, clean, non-sweat soaked clothes improve my attitude tremendously on the drive home.

I read someplace that... if a wickable shirt is ironed or even placed in a dryer...the pores close up and they are worthless. richg99

I dont kno. Im hesitant on buyin stuff like that. Thin cotton shirts are the way to go. Get a little sweat or water and a breeze will chill you up.

Under Armour 

I got the button up Guide Series shirts. I like button up over pull over. Vented across the back and a front pocket vent. Not as nice as the Columbia but the Columbia is almost 3x the price.

Simple solution: spagetti t-shirt underneath

Based on some of the posts I am in the minority. I fish with Columbia PFG long sleeves and I enjoy them. They keep me cool and shield me from the sun. Works for me.

I'm with you, Lou. Never really had a major issue with mine.

I got the cheaper long sleeves from Wally World. And wear a short sleeve Columbia shirt over it, both polyester, and I stay cool

Love mine so much I got my 3 year old one. She likes hers and it seems to keep us cool and our skin not in direct sunlight. I'll buy more when I need.
