Hi,

 

What's the "theory" or opinions as to why Red Hooks are supposed to be more effective ?

 

Is it true in your experiences ?

 

Or just another marketing ploy ?

I honestly haven't noticed a difference on subsurface baits like ripbaits or crankbaits.  On topwater I put a red hook on the front of every topwater I own with trebles.  Spooks, poppers I would say 9 out of 10 fish have the red treble in their mouth.  I quite frankly don't care why they eat it, but they sure do.

Cause they're shiny brass under the red?

I have been adding a splash of red to the gill area of my topwaters and shallow cranks for over 50 years. A friend of my dad introduced me to the relation of doing so to the amount of strikes I would get.  I've been doing it ever since.  I doubt the effectiveness of it in this day and age with all the fishing pressure, but continue the practice, or add a red trebel to the front hanger.

I do believe red is the first color to wash out as depth increases, but the testing and test equipment use factors of human vision as reference in all of their findings.  When a study is done using a fish's eyes perception and values in the testing equipment maybe I'll stop, but I don't see that happening in my lifetime.

I seem to get hammered on my senkos with my size 1 double wide mustads but not nearly as much with my owners or gamakatsus. Guy I'm partnered with on a trail swears by black hooks but with red o rings. I'm a believer, I think the bass target the shiny red thing as a vein or something.

I don't have any theories as to if they're better, but in most cases, the finish wears off quickly and the hook dulls quicker. Black nickel doesn't seem to have this problem.

Seriously, you do know that you will only catch fish if :

 

1.-  you use red hooks,

2.-  you have one rod & reel setup for each bait and technique,

3.-  you "match the hatch"

4.-  you fish during the full moon

 

And there are more that I cant remember right now.

 

If you don´t fish following those rules you will never catch fish.

You will catch more bass with sharp hooks.

I know they say that red is the first color to dissapear under water however it doesnt really dissapear. Yes the red does "dissapear" by definition but in reality it turns dark brown or black

I am a guitar player, and therefore believe in gear mojo.  Red hooks are definitely added mojo for me, so I will keep using them.  Also, sometimes they're cheaper than black nickel hooks!

I have confidence in them, that's why I fish them. As for catching more fish? I don't think they scare away any fish so they aren't hurting anything.

Bottom line seems to be if you believe you believe and will use them.

If you don't, you don't and Mr Bass ain't saying.

To me it comes down to confidence, because of what we've seen ourselves, or what someone else has done.

This was brought up recently in another thread. Red hooks do not hold up like black nickel hooks. And the red does wear off. Do they attract and catch more fish? You need to be the judge. Just check the points often and be prepared to sharpen/change them more often.
