Night Fishing

Featured Replies

I wasn't quite sure which forum to post this in, but its mostly about tackle. What kind of baits do you guys like to throw when night fishing? I'm assuming dark colored jigs and worms would work, what about rattling crankbaits and topwaters? I also have some black spinnerbaits and buzzbaits that might work. Idk much about this but I'll be on a 3 day camping trip at lake lopez this weekend and my friend and I are planning on trying night fishing, so feedback would be appreciated.:)

The old saying is black b/c the bass is looking up at the bright night sky with the moon and the black stands out.

I personally just stick with the same colors I use during the day.

Same lures & colors I throw during the day!

I do a lot of night fishing during the summer months but for me its gonna be a swimbait (hudd or triple trout) or a dark jig.

I have two solid black crankbaits that are killer at night.  One is from Depps and the other is from Megabass.   Both are small, shallow depth baits.

1/2 oz. black double bladed persuader buzzbait, 1/2 oz single colorado blade spinnerbait as big as will work and not make the bait roll over, and a musky jitterbug. The last will get you some heart stopping hits.

Black jig and craw, or a black Jitterbug are my favorites.

I watched a guy kill it one night on watermelon colored trick worms on a very small sliver of moon.  I dont think it matters what color you use and you should be good to go with the same baits your using during the day.  Hard baits like cranks and topwaters might do better in black, but i have done well with larger baits, vise color.  I use full size spooks and 6 inch or larger wake baits to get it done.  I slow down a little and use the larger profile on topwater to help me out.

Silhouette is more important than color & all colors silhouette against a night sky

While y'all are probing the surface I'm stroking on the bottom ;)

I like dark colored baits when the sky is darker and regular color baits when the moon is bright.

Prey creatures don't change colors just because it gets dark out.

Good point.

I like to use lures that make sounds and i always hear people say dark colors but i like bright florecent colors so the fish can see the lure better

My best two producers for night fishing have been a black Terminator spinnerbait that they no longer offer and a Jitterbug.  Big purple worms dipped in JJ's were killers during the full moon in water less than 15ft.  I lost that Terminator spinnerbait and tried another brand of a 'night time' one, but settled on another color Terminator that I removed the forward clevis and blade from.

Full moon or new moon, if you're going to fish soft plastics a black light will increase your catches. mine makes my 14lb. original Stren look like a strand of fibre optic from the water to my rod.  At first I was surprised at how many hits I wasn't feeling, now I almost don't try to feel for them I just watch my line.

Throw a quarter ounce chatterbait with a twin tail trailer. Drown in garlic. Thank me later.
