Spinning Reel On Casting Rod

Featured Replies

I bought a casting rod but couldent aford the reel yet but i have several spinning reels and i was wondring if i could put a spinning reel on my casting rod intill i can get another casting rod

Solved by Texas Pride

You can if you want. I've known a few guys with that combo not knowing what they were doing. Obviously once you can get the right reel on the better.

I would think the trigger would be in the way.  Technically I'm sure it would work but a spinning rod has those big guides for a reason.  Casting might not be very good.

I'm afraid that you are correct in your assumptions.

My friends dad has troubles casting a baitcaster so when we frog fish he puts a spinning reel on a casting rod for the back bone. Seems to work fine, May look a bit goofy but who cares.

Ahhh, heck man dont worry about that kind of stuff!!

So what if somebody thinks you dont know what you're doing, you do and you know why!!

I don't have patience for stuff like that.

Who are they to judge you?

I'll bet at some point in thier life they had to Improvise, Overcome and Adapt more than once to accomplish something they wanted to do but didn't have the means to do it just then.

You know it not ideal, but as long as you got a line in the water and have a hook tied on, just go catch a fish!!

Pull in a 10 pounder and maybe you'll start a trend.

Seriously, a spinner on a casting rod is doable but not very efficient.  I've seen it done many times, either with the reel on bottom and the rod is really upside down, or reel on top reeling backwards but the rod is right, I saw a lady land a small tarpon this way.

Bet nobody encroaches on your spot while doing this!

He never tried a stiffer spinning rod? Berkley Lightning Rod Shock makes some good heavy spinning rods.

Casting distance will suffer.  That is why I don't like micro guides on a spinning rod.  Took a Prodigy back for that reason, and picked another Prodigy with what is now their full size guides.  Still too small so I took it back and got store credit for something else.

Let go of that Texas Pride ;) do what you have to in order to get you out there. Make no apologies!

Well, the guys can spin the story anyway they like, but you will still look like a fool.

If you don't care, that's fine, but it is still the answer to your question:  "people will

think i dont know what im doing and think im stupid"

The guides on a casting rod aren't well suited for the elevated position of the spool.

Don'tcha think that trigger is gonna be purty darn uncomfortable being stuck in the palm of your hand ?

If you can´t afford baitcaster then go ahead and use a spinning reel, simple as that. It is not best combo, but better than nothing. Don`t worry about other anglers opinions I assure you most of them do not care at all.

Sometimes, ya gotta do what ya gotta do...

If you want to fish, fish with what you have until you get what you want.  Don't worry about what anyone else thinks!  Have fun... catch some fish!  That's what it's really all about, right?

Tight lines,

Bob

A spincast reel would be the best interim option. A spinning reel on a trigger rod with casting guides is a recipe for frustration. It won't cast well at all.

Noticed this a couple of weeks ago haha
