Blade Bait Build Help ...

Featured Replies

  • Super User

Bought some blade bait (chatterbait type) jigs to build over the winter.  My question is about powder painting the head.

Do I powder paint and cure it before I add the blade and pinch down the end?  Thought I might crack the paint doing that.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Paint first then attach hardware.

Agree. I would think you can add the hardware after and not crack the paint. I have beat the heck out of his baits and haven't had a paint issue at all.

I'm guessing you bought the heads that you add the blade directly to the wire eye and they pinch it shut? As long as you don't put your pliers on the head when you pinch the eye shut you should be fine.

Thanks. I painted it, cured it in the oven and assembled the blade to the jig right out of the oven. Worked great.

Since pinching the wire shut has been brought up, what is the best method for doing so? I can't seem to pinch mine shut the way I like, which is how I feel it should work in terms of effectively allowing the blade to "wobble" in the way that it should. I've since resulted to attaching split rings to closed eye heads instead, but would like to be able to still build chatterbait style baits with the opened eye heads that I have laying around.

I use a really small pair of channel lock pliers, they work as good as anything else I have tried.  It is a pain to bend the wire down to the head and your have to be careful not to chip the paint.   Here are a few I have done recently.

Flawless work amigo. I like the summer craw and the t-rock shad colors. Whenever I get the adapter to transfer pics from my camera to my tablet I'll post some of mine up. What hook is that by the way?

Thanks, look forward to seeing your work.  The hook is a Mustad Ultra Point

Seems like the eye is bigger than average for some reason.

Are those poured into a mold or is there somewhere you guys are getting unpainted jigs and modifying? The place I used to buy my chatterbait style heads doesn't sell them anymore. They got a cease and desist order from zman.

Great looking work. I'm about to start a new batch of my own.

Molds, but either way would work. It would be cheaper to buy pre-poured jigs and modify them.

Paint first then attach hardware.

I would go this route.  It would be difficult to paint and cure with the blade on.  I would also knock the paint off the eyelet or most of it.
