Lightest Line You'd Throw A Jig On?

Featured Replies

What is the lightest # test fluoro you'd throw a finesse football jig (in particular, dirty jigs finesse football 1/4 and 3/8 ounce) on? Thanks

Also this will be on a spinning combo (phenix m1 7'2" med + symetre 2500).

Guess it depends on the type of cover and type of jig I am fishing.  I use a 15lb Braid as my main line

If it's a heavy gauge hook then I tie straight Braid.

10-12lb leader FC otherwise.

Kind of answers your question.

8 or 10# flouro. The higher you go the more memory and line handling issues you will have. On the lighter side you lose the ability to fish around cover.

10# Fluoro or copoly, 20# braid.

10lb braid (Open water with the 1/4oz)

10#.  I feel 8# would snap too easy on hooksets.

Depends on the situation. Back in the day I had no problems fising 1/8 oz jigs with uncle josh's # 101 pork trailer on as light as 4lb test trilene xl.

I would probably never go above 8lb test on spinning. Anything from 10 lb up casting. But I like lighter lines. I have20lb braid on a casting rod now and really like it a ton.

I have a few spools of 6 and 8 lb test sniper, I'm gonna throw the 8 lb on and hope it doesn't break. Thanks for the replies guys!

The drag is there for a purpose - set it properly, and you won't break your line on a hookset. I usually go around 1/3 the breaking strength of the line (not the "test" advertised), so somewhere close to 3-4 lbs. of resistence should work well with 8 lb. line

A freind of mine fishes the Dirty finesse jig on 8 lb P-line FluoroClear, I use 10 lb Sunline Super Sniper because this jig uses a 4/0 Mustad Ultra point hook, both lines are about the same diameter.

Tom

10lb would be the lightest I would go.

There is your answer this guy knows jigs.

10lb is what it takes in clear water some times, just make sure not to jaw-jack them on the hookset and you'll be fine.

you can make good hooksets and another site on 8# if you're not in heavy brush or cover -
