All my reels are lower end Shimanos (Citicas, Curados, Cardiffs).

 

But my rod brands and prices are all over the place! Loomis NRX, a custom, Dobyns, Kistler, Daiwa, All Star, down to a BPS house brand. I have also owned Powells, Shimanos, Abu Garcias, Cabelas house brands and Berkleys in the past, and I love them all.

 

Anyone else in a similar boat?

Same here. As long as my reel can bomb lures, is reliable, and fairly lightweight, I don't care if it's expensive or not. With rods, I want the highest modulus I can get for any technique, but I feel it's most important for bottom contact baits.

Nice rods get nice reels. The reel is what is in my hand. The reel is what I use the most. The reel has the moving parts. Something about a high end reel just makes you smile.

Sort of I guess. I fish almost all St.Croix LTB's, or Academy Ethos rods. Reels are sort of the same way, almost all one flavor of Curado or another, then some Academy Mettles mixed in.

I agree...except for the high modulus, ive heard alot that higher does not mean better but whatever gives ya confidence, im all for that regardless...

I'd have to have wife, daughter and grandsons handy to count that far.  Not enough fingers and toes between the wife and I. 

 

OP:  I'm in the same boat....almost.  Most expensive rod (my cost) is a used Zillion.  My Berkley Lightning was $17 plus tax.  My customs were bought used at a steal.  Reels run from a Daiwa Procaster on closeout to a Daiwa PXL Type R on closeout.  I really need to downsize, but only have one rod that I would part with and not one reel that I am willing to let go.

I have one nice reel, and that is a Lew's Tournament MG Speed Spool. Maybe not nice in your book, but I love it. Both of my rods, a Berkley Lightning spinning and an Abu Vengeance casting, are cheap. My spinning reel was gotten for free, and is quite cheap. I'm hoping to replace it in the next year or so, but it works. 

 

My old spinning combo that gave up on me was a very old Shimano combo. That rod, despite it's chunky guides and reel handle, is far lighter than both my other rods, and the reel is a tank. Although they broke from the considerable abuse my combos get on the bank, and from age, they were a dream to fish. The only quality combo I've owned. 

 

Bottom line: Cheap equipment works, but high-end equipment works far better and lasts longer. The next time I purchase some equipment, I'll get something nice and consider it an investment. 

I'm basically that way!  Highest quality rods I can get, but I think the cutoff (for my feeling) is about the 200$ price point on reels.  I just don't think the reels priced higher than that make THAT MUCH of a difference for me.  So I feel your "problem" haha

No, most of my rods and reels cost about the same, I do have a few reels that are much more expensive than the rod I pair them too. Only once I had a "good" rod, a MBR783 GLX, I swear than other than a very slight difference in weight I felt no difference between it and an IMX, so why spend more if I can´t feel any difference ?

I suppose I'm the opposite, to an extent, in that

I'd swap your expensive rods for reels.

 

My main reels - 2 Chronarch 50e's and 2 Stradic 1000FI's.

 

Rods - BPS Carbonlites with all four reels.

 

Now I do have other rods, including an Avid, but

I don't like any of them as much as the Carbonlites

now.

Well, my journey has taken me in a new direction. My collection has been built slowly for

nearly eighteen years. I am in the process of selling some of my best equipment that just

doesn't get fished enough. The new phase is building a stable of custom rods and new

"enthusiast" reels.

 

Alpster crafted a spiral wrapped deep cranking rod using the Lamiglas SR705R blank.

Mike at DVT built a "Senko Rod" for me last year and I have a clasic under constuction

with Batson. The Alpster is matched with a CTE200GT, but may need an upgrade to the 

Conquest. The DVT is saddled with a Stella and will be left alone. The new Batson NEEDS

an Aldebaran!

 

I'm keeping a G. Loomis MBR 842C/ Core 50MG, St. Croix LES70MF/ Stella 2500, G. Loomis

MBR844C/ CTE100GT, G. Loomis BCR854/ Curado 200E, two Pinnacles and an Okuma for

now. I expect to move from twenty rigs down to eight and add something new maybe once a

year.

 

There is a current thread running in the Flea Market originated by a member looking for

a bulk deal. If that doesn't go through this gear will be reoffered to everyone. Take a look

and see if there is anything you might be interested in owning.

The title drew me in, the subject matter wasn't as interesting. 

My first world gear problem:  I have one more baitcasting rod than reels.  Found a great deal on a reel I wanted.  But the site had an even better deal on a rod I want.   When I receive them in a few days, I'm going to have one more rod than reels.   I will, no doubt, be shopping for a reel by the end of next week.

I have never found any need or want to spend more than $150 on a reel. Anymore I don't see any need to spend more than 150 on a rod either and probably wont do it ever again with the exception of if my dedicated drop shot rod breaks.

 I believe 100% that the rod means more.  I do how ever have some very good and expensive reels but if I had to choose more money would go toward the rods over the reels.

I stay in the middle too.  Now and then I break my $200 limit, but not often.  Usually manage to stay below $150

I spend more on rods but I have a few reels that are more expensive than the rod. I mainly own Dobyns but St. Croix has a soft spot in my heart since they were the rods I used when I used to fly fish. For reels I use only Shimano however they are mainly curados and chronarchs.

 

I'm actually thinking of selling my Curado E's and Chronarch E's and replace them with the Curado I's and Chronatch CI4s since they've impressed me so much!

In reference to the OP what's the problem?  Ya got some rods, got some reels, all that's left is to catch fish.

When it comes to fishing I have no problems, only decisions.  What am taking with me for my intended target species and the location for that day.

Catching fish is no problem, either I do or I don't.

Nice collection.  VERY nice.  Majority of my reels are also Daiwas, but there are plenty of other brands represented.  Your reels run more than mine, but if that is all the reels you have, you've got a ways to go to catch up.  Better get at it.
