Punching with egg sinkers?

Featured Replies

Anyone ever try punching grass mats and Lily pads with egg sinkers? I have a whole mess of them and I'm thinking about trying them. If rather use them up then spend the money on Tungsten. Thanks.

I've thought about that, myself.  I really don't see it being a problem, unless I'm missing something. So long as you peg it like you would a bullet weight, it should work just fine. Right?

That's what I'm thinking. I don't flip, pitch, or punch much so if rather not spend the money on stuff I won't use much.

It should work.  The only thing I would be concerned with is the lining of those sinkers scraping the line and thus weakening it.  It is pretty rough.

I'm planning on putting some kind of insert in the egg dinner to keep from having line issues. I'm also planning on pegging them.

the only thing i can think of is that the egg shape may grab vegetation on the way through since it isn't really streamlined and you will have a narrowing area close to the hook.  You won't really know unless you try though and it isn't like it is going to cost you anything to give it a whirl

You can use nuts & bolts if you want to. Egg sinkers will work. I don't think it's ideal, but it will work.

2 issues come to mind....

1.  If the pads are thick like water shield it will be difficult to bring weight out of water at end of presentation.

2.  The increased diameter could pop open bass mouth on hookset

Egg Sinkers will "Work" but if after punching with them for a few trips, try using the real thing.

An hour in with tungsten and you'll soon realize that everything else is like a fight.

Spot on.

I'd give it a shot, it's free to try. Like AJay said though, nothing beats tungsten and even after a short use that should be pretty evident.

I throw 1.5 oz. jika punch rigs that I make myself out of bass hooks, split rings and trolling weights.  Creativity and problem solving are what created the rigs we commonly use now.  Have at it, see what works and what doesn't, and report back!

Good idea...I just wonder if the big ones will get in the way of a hookset but good idea....I would love to hear the results...I am sure you can make it work with some adjustments....Good question.

When I started punching Hydrilla in the 70s I used whatever I could find.

Egg sinkers were replaced by bass casting sinkers that I cut the wire tie off.

You might try something like a coffee stir stick stuck into the hole and trimmed down as a kind of insert to protect the line.

I use these for drop shotting.

Me too, but I suck at drop shotting so take that for what it's worth.

Try rigging your plastics backwards and put the egg sinker on the hook, no worries about line damage and gives the bass something a little different.

I'll probably just end up buying some tungsten weights and be done with it.
