Hello,

I snagged this in the river this evening:

That's some really thick mono; I'd say 25lbs at least. 

There's an egg sinker on the line, and it almost looks like a catfish setup, except for the plastic lure there.

Thoughts?

I think Glenn has a video about that rig...

My guess , someone who does not know much about fishing found  a tore up plastic crawfish and tried it out .

Not sure what they were trying to accomplish with that rig but that knot looks like Stevie Wonder tied it.

I do the same thing with a bullet sinker..let it slide on the line. It appears to be the same setup but with an egg sinker..probably a kid or maybe when stevie wonder was grabbing a weight he thought he grabbed a bullet but it was an egg.

If its a river than my thought are the current was a little strong and he had to ghetto rig  it that way to keep the line from going with the current

Fishing is all about problem solving.  To us, a Kahle live bait hook, attached with a square knot, and a egg sinker may look odd, but it might have been all the person had, and of it got that bait to where the fish are, it probably got bit.  Clearly, it got hung up, so that's the next part of the problem to be solved.

It's seeing things like this that make this site so useful and satisfying - our members can skip all the trial and error.

It looks like the next rig I'll be trying out!

That's the one! It improves the action of all bottom contact baits.

That's my fly fishing rig. 

I once pulled in a maybe 1/2oz lipless crank, which was tied to a three way swivel, with a 2oz bank sinker tied with a short bit of line to the swivel as well.  I get that someone was trying to get their lure down deep, but this was in a pond that might hit 6' in the middle.

Rofl. I'd assume with a weight that big they wanted a catfish 

I was almost wondering if they were trying artificials for catfish.  I've caught catfish on inline spinners, but bass lures certainly wouldn't be my first choice.

The really heavy mono also had me wondering for that same reason.  We just don't have bass in Indiana that justifies mono that big around.

I have a bad habit of leaving stuff laying round when I leave.  Sometimes it'll be an extra bag of plastics that were working well, and sometimes it'll be something a bit more expensive.  (Left a Live Target squarebill once...)

I'm wondering what would help this person out.

This is an philosophy you need to abandon.  Line size has zero to do with the size of bass.  No bass is big enough to break most line we use.  Heck, I go as low as 3# fluoro for smallmouth  - IN OPEN WATER.  I've also used 30# fluoro for largemouth in weeds that have zebra mussels growing on them.

The main drivers behind using heavy line is COVER and ABRASION.

Anyway, I really think this person simply saw someone catch a fish on a Texas rig, and did their best to approximate the rig.  Instead of making fun, the next time you see this type of thing, give them some hooks, weights, a few baits, and a quick lesson on how to tie it up and fish it.  That's how I learned about a Texas Rig.  Some anonymous bass fisherman passing our dock took time out from a tournament to show a ten year old a new way to fish.

That is the attitude we should all have!  Like J Francho, I also remember a few kind and helpful folks who helped me enjoy fishing a bit more.  Never pass up the chance to help someone out.

i dont think its a case of idiocy as many surmise, i think its actually pretty smart. get your bait to the bottom and keep it from drifting back parallel to the bank every 10 seconds. and i imagine the bait gets plenty action in the current. its pretty much just a slip rig...
