Remember serving up on Adak, Alaska for 1 year, 17 days, 13 hours and 20 min.  Got off the Island on the 21st of June on my 21 birthday.  Was quit an adventure that I would do again.  Thank you all for your service.

I'm a former "Adakian" as well.  Served there from '89-'91.  Great tour.  On a side note, that was my second tour - the first was Western Australia for three years.  Tough gig there!

From Grunt to Helos.  Musta got tired of being left at the LZ - better to drop the Grunts at the LZ and then get to leave right away...;)

Retired Navy PNC here. 23 enjoyable years. Now completely retired and looking forward to many more days on the water, only this time it will be fishing. GO NAVY

I really enjoyed fishing in the creeks, lake and ocean while there.  Never caught anything really big but was something to do.

I regret waiting to begin fishing until the middle of last year because I was at Ft. Polk in Louisiana - now I know the kinds of places I missed.  I was less than an hour from South Toledo Bend! :(

That said, that is the ONLY thing I regret about Louisiana - hated that place.

I never caught anything of size in the lakes, but the streams, one in particular, held very nice dolly varden.  The creek ran under the tundra.  You had to pull back the grass and drop your lure in the water.

The saltwater fishing was great.  I never hooked into any big halibut (my PB there was only 60 lbs.), but I witnessed a lot of fish between 100 - 200 lbs.  True doormats.  I even caught halibut fishing off the piers.

Of course you also had the pink, red and silver salmon.  A lot of good memories from that tour!

That's where I went to basic training in Aug. 73 and yes I hated it too.

Ugh, Polk was just terrible.  You had it before the days of the internet and the like - you have my sympathies. :)
