Bluegill are illegal in most of California with a few exceptions, the Colorado River and The San Joaquin Delta depending where you fish, check the regs.

Cause its freaking California and the problem with my former state is they don't realize or they don't venture far enough to see how anyone else in the rest of the country does things.  $500 for a red light ticket?  the next highest is NYC at $250.  because in California the public employees make double the averaghe salary of private employees and people need jobs, and non-profits like to sue.   After moving to back to the East coast , now in Stuart, Florida.  Holy **** is CA backwards.

In Minnesota it's also illegal to use sunnies, crappie or perch as bait.

striper fishermen use live bluegill for bait in the Delta all the time

Yes it's a great bait for freshwater stripers and many other types of fish. They make good bait for freshwater snook and tarpon as well.

Everything is illegal in Cali except for giving your entire income to them, they know best! Get used to it OR get out!  Many others are.

This is a bit extreme. Everything?

I fish lawfully.  I might not understand or agree but I’ll comply.

I hate invasive species stuff.  My own yard was covered in bamboo.  I would outlaw that plant here.  :)

my dream bass fishing trip is to fish a golden shiner in weeds. I’ll head to Florida.

The laws about no live bait except worms is stupid and the fact that I can catch like ten gills in ten minutes and can not use any of them for bait for big bass just is stupid

It's like that in other places too.

Minnesota: We can use worms, leeches, insects, crayfish, bullhead and minnows (specific species)...and that's it for live bait. If you catch your own water species (leeches, crayfish, bullhead, minnows), they HAVE to be used in the same waters (lake, pond, stream, river) that you caught the bait. You also cannot return unused bait to the water, they have to be disposed of in the trash.

It has been illegal to use any live fish for bait in many western states for decades.  The reason has always been fear of introducing unwanted species from one body of water to another.  This management practice is common in many western states including AK, WA ID CA and has been around for longer than most people on this forum have been alive. (Long before the tackle industry was big enough to have any influence on fisheries management decisions.)  I try to avoid any discussion on weather or not any fish and game laws are good or bad.  Like most laws, they benefit some and are bad for others.

I almost lost a good friend to an idiot running a red light.

im good with the robust fine.

I work as a civil engineer. The stuff I’ve seen with people running lights, I think $500 is light.

You can legal live bait, read the regulations.

Live threadfin Shad are common baitfish if you net them in the lake you are fishing. Live Canadian night crawlers are+legal. Crawdads are legal in most lakes except those with Quagga regulations as they can transport them.

You can’t use live game fish like Bluegill or Crappie everywhere, read the regulations.

Where I live at in Stockton, you can use live bluegills for bait. You just can't transport them to another place to fish with them. They have to be used where you caught them at. That is what fish and game told me. This is for the Delta.

In Michigan we can use any non game fish for bait including any suckers

, pan fish, rock bass, and perch. I believe it has to be caught in the same body of water.

One  Thing is though is it counts against your daily limit.  So after you put your blue gill on the hook and only now have 24 gills in your bucket the one on the hook is still counted in your possession.  A person couldn’t catch another blue gill and throw it in the bucket because, now you would have 26 blue gill in your possession (25 in bucket +1 being used as bait). Some guys have gotten nailed this way by being one over

bass and pike love a perch or blue gill under a bobber.

minnows if bought at a bait shop can’t be dumped in any body of water they must be kept for later or killed
