My son and I did a little early evening fishing yesterday on Somerset Lake in Sun City, Hilton Head (more like a giant pond). We've never had any luck there, but members of the fishing club at Sun City said that they tagged a dozen or so 8-10 bass there.

 

Anyway, we talked with a few people while fishing and one said that some big bass were caught there using slightly cooked hot dogs as bait. I know hot dogs can be used for catfish, but I've never heard of using them for bass. Have any of you used hot dogs to catch bass?

No, but I caught a 4 pounder once on a doughball !

No but my friend's daughter caught a few bass here when catfish fishing with cutbait.

Cut the hot dog in half long ways, use a 6/0 trokar ewg and hook it weedless. 

 

Fish it weightless like a topwater trick worm. Super secret old school trick.

Careful, this thing could take off and next thing you know we'll be debating the cost effectiveness/durability of fish per hot dog vs. the senko at $7 per pack. LOL

My son and daughter have caught numerous bass, sunnies and catfish on chunks of hotdogs. Different bodies of water as well.

Hot dogs are actually a very common bait for tip-up ice fishing here in the north country. It catches both bass and Pike. 

 

It's so common there's actually hotdog only Pike tournaments. 

I have witnessed bass being caught on chicken liver and also hot dogs while fishing for catfish. I asked a fisheries biologist about it and he said that the fish was close by and likely hungry but you won't consistently catch them on those baits. He told me a story about guys using dough balls for carp and catching a fair number of bass on them and he had a good explanation. He said that they figure at least have the time bass catches on those types of baits are due to small minnows and panfish nipping at the offering and a bass comes in and ends up catching the bait rather than the intended target.

Hm hotdog for bass... interesting. Ill have to try that with a worm hook on it, has me curious now. Maybe attach a little underspin, rooster tail on the back lol. How could they resist?

Maybe I should start using Vienna sausages for jig trailers

They actually make a hot dog hook. If you get any it's worth spending a little more and get the ones with the built in  bun keeper?

I have caught several bass over 4 pounds and some over 5 pounds as bycatch while fishing for channel catfish with hotdogs. With cutbait I have caught bass close to 8 pounds. This does not happen often and you will be better off using lures for bass if you are specially fishing for bass.

I've caught lots of bass up to 6 pounds on cutbait fishing for catfish, even on frozen pieces. Bass are not overly smart creatures, it just seems like it some days.
