Hello

I would like to purchase a new shakyhead rod for this coming season.  I am currently thinking either the G Loomis shakyhead spinning rod GLX series or the St. Croix Legend X rod.  I will not spend $400 on a rod without first putting it in my hands to evaluate the feel.  Problem is that I cannot find anyone who stocks these rods near Virginia.  Does anyone know of a way for me to look at these rods?

If you cant find a dealer near you with:

http://www.gloomis.com/content/gloomis/northamerica/usfly/en/homepage/DEALER_LOCATOR.html

Or.....

https://stcroixrods.com/pages/dealer-locator

Then your best bet is to find one with an individual near you.  Personally, if you read enough reviews, you should get a general idea of what the action is like on both rods.  Usually, higher end rods are purchased by someone who is looking specifically for them and has a good idea what they want.

At $400 or less you can have a custom rod made to your exact requirements using state of the art rod blank and components, check with DVT the site sponsor.

I'd ask around your local club and see if anyone has those models that you're looking for. Otherwise you might be traveling a little bit to handle that expensive of a rod in person. Not many shops stock too many rods over the $250 price point.

I thînk Green Top by Richmond carries high end St Croix and/or Loomis Rods, it might be worth calling them to see what they have in stock.

^^ This. @Delaware Valley Tackle (DVT) made a custom rod for me this year with a St. Croix SCV blank (same blank that's used for the Legend X, Legend Elite and Legend Xtreme rods). Same price as the St. Croix rod would have been but it's tailored to exactly what I wanted.

Custom is nice but at $400, I like the piece of mind that comes with a warranty.

Generally you get the warranty that comes with the blanks the builder uses. So if they use a St Croix blank, for example, then you get the warranty that St Croix has on that particular blank. A lot of times a builder will stand by their products and will most likely send a warranty certificate or take care of the product for you.

Exactly! Brand new at your door in 2-3 days. The reasons I don't buy a custom. Just easier to buy from a company with a good warranty already.

Welcome aboard!

Depending on where you are in VA, there are some places that will

carry higher end rods. Bishop's Bait & Tackle comes to mind, in

Yorktown on Rte 17, though he does mostly saltwater business.

I bought 14 Conquests without ever holding one in my hand.  I'm 110% satisfied with all of them....

My vote out of the two you mentioned is for the GLX (or better yet a NRX 852S or Conquest 842S).

Good luck :thumbsup3:
