Balancing Reel When Using Backing

Featured Replies

I’ve looked at a couple videos on this subject that say the knot on the spool and the connection knot between backing and main line should be on opposite sides.

Is this really that important? I can’t see two small knots being on the same side of the spool causing any problems. Of course I could be wrong and that’s why I’m asking!

When I use to use backing, I never paid any attention where the knots were. All of the reels that had backing would cast just fine..

Never heard of that, I wouldn't worry about it.

Not me! I eat my vegetables, not smoke them!

It kinda makes sense, but any difference it makes would be negligible. You’d never in a million years see or feel it.

My suspicions have been confirmed. Didn’t think it would make any difference. Thanks.

If you think it's a problem why not tie both knots in the center of the spool.

I've noticed it on BFS spools when I tied a short length of mono under my braid. But we're talking spools under 8 grams. Just use a small piece of tape now.

What supposed problem would be caused by having said knots on the same side?  I just don't get it.

I guess what they are suggesting is that if both knots were on the same side, it would cause the spool to go out of balance because of the added weight. Except that a knot in the middle of the spool would cause less weight, not more. But even that is academic, cause the minor differences are negligible. Something else that folks that read too much and fish too little worry about.

I have had to retie my backing to mainline knots before due to them being overly large and yes it caused vibration.  Tied smaller knot , problem solved.    These were 7 turn uni-uni knots so they were quite large and caused a small bulge in the mainline.

Just when I think I've heard everything.

5/0, you'll be fine man.  Tie the knots wherever you like.

I saw on a youtube video by a certain 'Informative' fisherman that spraying lube in your rod guides will increase casting distance.   Gotta be careful what you take to heart out there.

Sounds like someone who spends more time reading fishing forums than being on the water came up with that BS.....
