Neglect! That's just aweful. ?

Is it safe to say you do not do an annual maintenance of cleaning and lube?

if you're going to treat your reels like that, that's a good reason to buy low end reels.   I'm guessing you don't tournament fish.   Lose one or two decent fish during a tournament and you'll cop a different attitude about reel maintenance.

Low end reels? Yes. Tournaments? Nope. That being said i dont recall ever losing a fish because of my reel. But if i did happen, i would just smile and keep casting (with a different reel). I try to never "cop an attitude" if i can help it

the shimanos of that era and prior (mainly symmetres and stradics) were famous for binding up when wet.

never happened to me, but I did have a symmetre bind up (wasnt wet) that when I took it apart the friction ring inside had fragmented and was causing the reel to jam up when retrieving.

people used to call them 'shimbindos'

Yep ..... why I never bought them.  Saw way to many bind and ruin a Northern Pike catch of a lifetime for buddies.  Yet they were constantly telling me why their high dollar stradics were better than my president supremes.  In twentynine wilderness trips they never let me down.  At least 5000 walleye and pike with ZERO cleaning ? And still going strong.

Sooooooo..... You diagnosed it even more accurately. It got sticky when i was fishing and i wanted to keep using it...... So i did what i have done in the past for a last ditch effort that works sometimes..... I dunked it in the water a few times. Then it bound up completely!  Worked great yesterday after i cleaned it . Ive been taking reels apart since i was a little kid so its no trouble for me

You fish for pike with spinning reels??? I dont know anything about pike fishing, just figured they were big and bad round baitcaster type fish

I've caught more Northerns on spinning gear than baitcasters. Just needs to be a decent spinner...my old Mitchell 320 killed them.

My dad used spinning exclusively, and loved pike fishing.  He had a DAM Quick 5000 size reel, and used 12# mono.  Rod was a 7-6 MH Garcia rod.  Caught 'em fine.

Now that sounds pretty beefy!

I used to buy 30.00 Shimano TX's and beat them to death when I was wading creeks. They were plenty smooth when new and I liked the quickfire trigger. They'd start getting wonkey after a season or two and I'd find another one. Life was simpler then. You didn't worry about dropping things.

Yeah i go from bass boat to canoe to bank/wade fishing all the time so everything stays wet muddy and sandy. My stuff has never seen a rod locker or garage, because i have neither

Most of them are caught while walleye fishing.  We have caught some large ones on spinning though.  It's all about the drag and skill of the person fighting it.  Except of course when the stradic decided to lock up mid fight......lol
