Beater Spinnerbait rod

Featured Replies

Looking for a cheap spinnerbait/general moving bait I can use to walk the banks and throw single hook moving baits with. Tired of carrying around reel/rod covers and worrying about the equipment being scratched.

It needs to be a slower action rod, something M-MH, mod fast, will probably but 14lb suffix siege in there, maybe advance.

Mostly considering

-All Star rod, 7M or 7MH

-Dobyns colt 703

What do do you guys think? Will throw an SLX on it.

Shimano exage or SLX would be good beater rods.

Plus it will match the colors of the reel.

But they may not be slow enough for you.

Yea, that was my issue with them.

I used an ugly stick for a long time years ago.  They always worked great for spinnerbaits.  I don't know if the newer ones are any different

I've got a bps7' mh/f 'graphite series' rod as my spinnerbait rod. It's on the 'soft/flexy' side. Usually can be had for 30 bucks on sale. Would definatly be a good beater rod.

Maybe I will just go to BPS and pick one out.

right now I am leaning toward the dobyns. 64 bucks on sale, and I know the action Of the 703 well, wish I hadn’t sold my fury.

I used an Ethos 6' 10" MH/F for several years and it was one of the best spinnerbait rods I owned. Bought it on clearance for $21. Even full price they're only $60.

Assuming it is a modfast type action, like all rods at that price point?

They rated it as a MH/F, but it was probably closer to a MH/MF. It was an excellent spinnerbait and buzzbait rod.

I had an allstar 66MH, was a great spinnerbait rod. Worked well with poppers as well. More of a modfast

They have Allstar rods that are on sale all the time too. I have an AllStar (forget exact name) "spinnerbait" model that I use for buzzbaits that was around $40 that works well for both also.

I picked up two new Quantum KVD Tour rods for $60 each on eBay.  So far for $60, I'm pretty amazed.  I bought two different ones thinking if something happens while I'm on my kayak or out beating the bank then I won't be heart broken.

I use a All Star Pro Series MH Fast for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, & Traps.

Academy sales a All Star Classic Series for $49.99 & occasionally $35.

One of them was a 7'4'' Heavy X-Fast and the tip is soft but the rest is pretty stiff.  I have used it for 1/2oz War Eagles and it will cast them pretty far but the ideal purpose of this rod is for pitching jigs and soft plastic.  I like it so far.  My only gripe is that if you have fished a St. Croix or G. Loomis you can definitely tell the quality difference.
