Flipping hook vs. EWG for texas rigs

Featured Replies

What is everyone's preference for texas rigs? I've stuck with EWG's in every situation unless I'm flipping pretty heavy cover with braid.

I  use regular off-sets most of the time .Generally I choose one with the gap a little more than twice the thickness of the bait .

Worms/lizards/narrow profile I use a regular offset. If it's a bigger-body bait (Berkley Pit Boss/R.I. Sweet Beaver/S.K. Rage Bug/etc) then I'll use an EWG.

I stick with EWGs for pitching heavy cover as well.  I haven't had the bend catch on anything that I've noticed, and it helps my plastic stay on the hook instead of sliding down the shank.  The bait keepers on a lot of flipping hooks are nice and I'm sure they do the job well, but I like to keep it simple.

I like offset round bend for worming, but as far as pitching to cover goes I've normally got a 4/0 or 5/0 EWG tied on.

Straight Shank Round Bend

Straight shank for braid, EWG for fluoro and copolymer.

I keep it simple, straight shank hooks for wacky rigs, EWG for T-Rigs and flippin' hooks for throwing in thick cover. I use EWG at least 80% of the time.

Gamakatsu EWG 4/0 gets 95% of my work done, I texpose it. Most of my trig fishing is in heavy wood cover using fluorocarbon. I also use a bobber stop to keep weight pegged.

I recently found the Mustad off set grip pin hooks for worms and lizards. I like to use 8” Jelly Worms and these hooks have the best hook up ratio and save the baits from getting torn up at the bend. I used to use EWG for everything, but switched back to off set for more narrow baits.

I use flippin hooks on beaver style or some thicker craw style bait. Wide gap in worms, senkos etc.

Like others have said, I use offsets for narrow baits, ewg for thick baits. Straight shank flipping hooks pop out to easy for my liking.

I ALWAYS flip cover with 4/0 Gamakatsu Superline EWG & 65# PowerPro. It’s simple and it just works. I’ll use between a 3/0-5/0 in different situations and line types, but always always EWG Gamakatsu.
