Line for Son’s Spinning reel?

Featured Replies

Hey folks. During the downtime I’ve been fishing more and my son who is 11 has been coming along. He is proficient with a spinning reel and uses 1 rod and reel.
2500 size Plfueger President / 7’ St. Croix Avid spinning rod.

What would be the best all around line for him. Weightless Senko / Swim Jigs. Thanks.

Go with the Yo-Zuri...and get a bottle of KVD as well - really helps manage the Hybrid.

Everyone has their preferences but with one setup I really like having braid with a leader. I keep 15-20lb braid on my spinning rod and a spool of 6-8lb flouro. Most the time I have leader attached but it's nice being able to run straight braid when I want to throw smaller top water. Not dealing with line memory would probably be easier on a kid that age too.

8lb BPS Excel mono.  Been using it for 19 years on my spinning reels on the Potomac.  Trouble free spinning reel fishing and always close the bail by hand.

People love their fluorocarbon for sinking and bottom baits and so do I but in 12# or greater line. Won’t catch me using it on a spinning reel.

Sufix Elite or Siege in 6-8# line for the reel you mention. I would lean towards elite as it is friendlier than siege on spinning reels unless you have line conditioner.

Buy a big spool of something you would want to use. Or, get some Trilene XL and be done with it. I still use it on occasion and it is really good line.

My son uses 10 lb suffix 832 in hi vis yellow with a 10lb  yo Zuri Hybrid leader. So he can watch his line when senko fishing.

Put the line you would use.

Suggestion: Put your backing line on half of the spool and the good line on the rest of the spool, leaving 1/8 inch from the top of the spool clear.

This will cut down on line costs.

As for the line test, what does the say regarding line size and what are the line test and bait weight for the rod?

Add the high and low for the rod's line test and then divide by two and you have the best performing line test for your setup.

Regarding your query as to what line to use, anything you, as the dad, has confidence.

Im an old school mono fan so I would use 8 or 10 pound Sufix Siege on there. casts well and strong.
