Spring temp for topwater

Featured Replies

Sure this has been addressed but it didnt come up in my search specifically for smallies, when do you all start throwing topwater (water temp)?

I wait until after they’re off the beds myself... so post-spawn.  Usually starting second half of June in the North, water temps in mid-60’s+

You can srart throwing topwaters when the water is 55+ in the early morning. After early morning they will suspend more

I was thinking 55 plus. Usually i dont break the frog out til june but ive been making poppers and and some other hardbaits so i was thinking id give them a go. Earlier than normal

They are whacking them on Table Rock with water in the 50s.

Perfect ive started getting action in the eddies near the bank in skinny water the last couple days on square bills and jerks so ill have to see if theyll come up as well.

Well I think the conventional approach is generally around 60 degrees. I bring out the topwater frogs when the water temp hits 60 degrees, but I will bring out smaller topwaters like poppers when the water hits 55, sometimes even before that.

Small poppers can work over bedding fish. I don't throw most topwaters until water temps get to the mid-60s. I've heard of people throwing Buzzbaits in early prespawn but never had that work myself.

I've had some good topwater days in lower water temps during warm spells.

Although, I'm pretty sure I could have caught more fishing a jerk bait, but topwater is my addiction

Caught my first topwater bass of the year just today.

Im in London Ontario

given all the other options and that fact that they are feeding in craw big time, I usually wait until after the spawn and I always catch bigger fish on the bottom, this time of year

You are asking about Smallmouth bass....right?

Smallmouth are far more aggressive then LMB targeting top water lures. I would always have a top lure tied on if see or meter Smallmouth in less then 20' of water.
