Why are you not using a digital reel?

Featured Replies

Interesting conversation to say the least and you can certainly separate the myth from reality. Having owned DC reels since their inception it has been entertaining. Shimano introduced the DC reel in 2003 by the way of the Calcutta Conquest(having 8 adjustments) which took a reel that turned 15,000 -20,000 rpms to a reel that turned 30,000 plus rpms with the ability to adjust the spool speed in 1/1000th of a second. Now I can thumb a reel just like everyone else so I certainly challenged the reel but at the same time was intrigued by the increase in the spool speed. d**n it did perform with longer casts but you still had to be vigilant with your thumb just in case. In 2006  they introduced the 4X8 Digital Antares/Calais DC which took it to the next plateau more adjustment and longer distance to boot. Now I say distance because I use them for topwater, cranking, frogging and want to have the ability to reach out . In 2008 the Conquest got a little dumbed down in distance  but now in 2020 they are saying it is back (have one on its way). The Antares in 2016 was done over with some weight reduction with no cast control knob but maintained the 4X8 Digital Control continuing its ability to reach out. I commend Shimano for bringing out more DC models but at the same time they have put a restrictor plate on those reels . Having owned these reels for 14 to 17 years they still perform like new and have stood the test of time.....P.S. On the Antares wind mode I did not believe it would work but it did and laughed like hell watching the reels ability to adjust all on its own while still achieving its ability to get distance.

Have no desire to own one. Nothing against them or people using them. I like what I have and have no need for a computerized reel. As stated no need for anyone to justify it either way. If you like em

Lew’s Pro Ti.

Why. Because I am able to cast light lures a country mile and I have the drag needed to land the occasional Channel Cat that chomps them

A qualification.  I often am casting for distance.

Helios Air.  First cast and I thought "Wow!  This thing can cast."  A consistent performer.

Primmus Xi HS.  First couple years was mostly casting 3/8 oz. treble lures.  Never an overrun/backlash.  Excellent distance.  Only after trying a lighter lure (don't recall weight) did I ever get an overrun.

Zillion 50th.  Whats not to like!  Another trouble free reel.  Let a guy who had trouble using his baitcast reel try it.  He came back about 15 minutes later and asked "How do you backlash this reel?"

TDZ 105H.  Nuff said.  :lol1:

Chronarch 100B.  Don't think I have backlashed it yet.  Excellent distance on Powell Endurance 723C.

Curado 201E7.  Can't add to what has already been said about this reel....many times by many people.

Older gold Carbonlite.  Dual brakes.  One of the reels I learned to cast #5 Shad Raps with.

Older Patriarch XT.  Brakes set lighter than most any reel I own and does a great job with weightless 10" ribbontails.  Looks great.  Feels great.  Casts very well.

PXL Type R.  A match made in heaven on a 6'6" Aetos MLM.

EDIT:  Admit to being a fan of the older Excense DC I have.

Lol

I don't own a DC reel because I don't want one.  Easy answer and the only one I need.  Not sure why this thread has such a hostile vibe.  I guess if someone is worried about what gear I use, that's their problem, not mine

Lews Tournament Pro. IMHO it casts almost completely trouble free and further than any reel I've ever seen. And a dc won't catch me any more fish.

Pretty consistent with lews, low price and from what peoeple say they are perfect. Perhaps underrated.

You said you are looking to buy another reel and looking for reasons to not buy another DC. Then you went on to say they outperform all regular reels. This is confusing. If you are so sure that a DC is better than anything else why do you want to get talked out of it? If money's no issue get a DC that's what you like anyway
