i have been using the river to sea whopper plopper size 90 recently, i notice i have to keep the rod tip high to get it to swim right, if i keep the rod tip lower the action is not there, is this common. or possibly the wrong line.

I’ve seen the same thing with the 90s. It’s a bit annoying so I’ve started throwing the Choppo 90 when I want to use that size. I still throw the whopper plopped in the other sizes. That being said, You didn’t mention what line you were using. You should use mono or braid when throwing any top water bait. Floro is denser than mono and sinks which impedes the action of top water lures.

That’s what I use. Like you said keeping the rod tip high prevents any issues. 
 

I still use the 90. Straight retrieve but also a lot of start and stop plus twitching. Something about the way it sits in the water at rest accounts for a lot of my Smallmouth catches. 

Right now I am only fishing the whopper 110, which works well on 17lb XL mono.

*Good information on the WP90 - will try similar technique on spotted bass down here ... My favorites are : WP75 , WP110 , WP130 (bone only) , Choppo 105 , Choppo 120 ... Bone , Translucent , Blue Gill and a Black in any of those models above .

Loved the WP 110 best, tried the WP 90, didn't like it bc of above problem, found the WP 75 which supposedly corrects the problems with the WP 90 and it does. 

 

I almost exclusively use the WP 75 now. 

I've pretty much stopped using the other sizes once I gave in and started throwing the 75. There are no issues with nosediving like the 90. It's been in the top 3 of my most productive baits since January. It still doesn't make sense to me that it was working in 37 degree water, but it was. It's still kicking you know what. Perch and Loon cover most bases.

River@Sea redesigned the 90 because of it's inherent problems and came out with the 75. The 75 is a much better design. The 90 was the only size that had problems

This x2.  75 may be shorter but it fishes bigger than the 90 and tracks truer...

I have the same size in bone color and I have noticed this as well. Doesn’t hurt the effectiveness but it’s annoying all the same.

I use the 75, and have noticed I have to hod the rod higher than I normally would. Like at the 2 or 3 o’clock position. 

i picked up a 75 today and a berkley choppo in the 110, will experiment tomorrow

*True - however as NYWayfarer indicated : If you know how to work around the shortcomings of the WP 90 it can still produce for you , so don't give up on the WP 90's you may already have . That said , the WP 75 is a cool deal as it has the same size prop as the WP 110 (another favorite) . 

I use to use 50lb Power Pro with the 110 and 90.  With the 110 it worked great but 90 it just seemed to nose dive a little, like it wasn't staying on plain.  I have since switched to using 12lb or 15lb FC and have not had any issues.  I know this doesn't sound right and I really have no explanation but FC worked this issue out with the 90 and I really don't notice it with the 110.  I have a two 75's and have not had as much luck with them all around.  They don't seem to plain as well with any line I have used and I don't tend to get as many hits.

The Berkeley Choppo has worked well for us also....and 1/2 the price. 

Send me all your trash 90 ploppers, I'll dispose of them for you.

 

I use the 90 a majority of the time. Swap the hooks, fished on 20lb braid with the rod tip up to get them started. I don't have any issues with them.

Me too-me too...you can split them between Blue and myself.

 

I have one WP-110 - but I rarely put it on. If I'm fishing Ploppers, it's mostly my 90s with 40#832 and 12# YZH leader. Ya, I keep the tip up, but not extremely so.

I keep the rod up with the plopper but I prefer it. When I get a hit I drop the rod tip a little bit and set the hook.
