I shot my second buck ever today, island deer do not get too big but he will definitely feed the family.

 

 

Congrats on harvesting your deer. My 10 year old son harvested his first deer this year. We’ve been enjoying jerky. I found a nice tenderloin recipe I’m looking forward to trying in the near future.

Good buck! They make so much good eating I wish we could shoot more than one a year, my processor makes a meat stick thats unbelievable and jerky/backstrap steaks/tenderloin pan fried all go down good

My buddies hunted somewhere in middle Tennessee where you can kill 3 does..... a day! With a rifle! In East TN the limits are much more stringent, I don’t even think you are allowed to kill a doe with a rifle, much less 3! The important detail is that they brought me an entire doe!!!! Hooray !

There is a limit here in MN but its based on what portion of the state you hunt in (specific zones).  Some zones allow the harvest of up to 5 antlerless deer.  The area I primarily hunt in allows the harvest of a buck OR doe with your primary license, plus the additional option to purchase two extra bonus tags which are only good for antlerless deer.  The bag limit on bucks is always one per season.  Harvest of antlerless deer is the primary tool that game agencies use to control deer herds, which is why they are often several bonus tags to harvest them available.

 

Frankly, the does taste better than the bucks too.  Bucks might look nice on the wall but they often taste like leather because they're in the rut and pumped up with hormones.  A young, corn fed doe will always taste better.  A guy can only eat so much of that stuff too IMO.  A whole deer is a lot of venison.

That’s about how our state is. Where I live you can’t kill much compared to middle and west TN. Also I’ve yet to find that “only eat so much” threshold. I’d rather eat it than just about anything. Kind of salivating just typing about it  

"Harvesting" sounds so PC. I thought that term was for people who manage wildlife? The guy killed an animal and is going to feed his family. What could be more natural? It's called hunting. Killing. Eating. Harvesting is for hippies growing kale and eating wheat germ.  

Harvesting is a bit of a PC term, I agree.  But that's what is used in the regulations manual so that's what I often use when I quote the regs.

“Harvesting” could be seen as PC, but I think it’s more of a respect thing. I’m no hippie, tree hugger, or a PC person by any means at all. More the opposite. 
 

I think the term harvesting is more of a respect thing towards the animal you are taking. And harvesting just sounds better. 
 

My son harvested his first deer this year (which he did) sounds better and more respectful than ‘my son killed his first deer this year’.
