Red Eye Shad sizes?

Featured Replies

Do you guys alternate 1/4oz, 1/2oz, and 3/4oz in the same depth for faster and slower rate of fall with good luck?
Can you give any tips and tricks for the res?

I don't know about the RES specifically - but I've had some luck switching around between Ratlin' Rap 05 (3/8), 07 (1/2) and 08 (3/4). Sometimes they ignore the 08, but a 05 run through the same area/depth will make them hit...same color scheme even. Just have to slow the retrieve with the lighter ones to run them at the same depth.

Every video I watch says to yo yo it off the bottom so I thought maybe different rates of fall would be a good thing. It’s good enough that I’ll pick up a variety of RES tomar hopefully. I tried yo yoing today but the only bass I caught today was burning it in. Must not been a yo yo kinda day

I don't yo-yo much - slow-roll it just fast enough to create a wobble with a little rattle action on the lighter ones after burning a heavier one through.

I only throw a 1/2 ounce red eye shad and very seldom use a steady retrieve.

The lift drop retrieve catches me a lot more fish.

The key is to keep contact with the bait when it is falling.

On a semi tight line the bait wobbles on the way down.

On a slack line it tumbles to the bottom.

Lately I have caught more fish on the red eye shad 2 tap. It is identical to the original except, instead of all the rattles it has 2 tungsten weights.

I use all three sizes and bounce them on the bottom like a worm . The 1/4 ounce I usually use for white bass . The 1/2 ounce I use the most . I wore out  a school of bass one day  this year at 24 foot on the 3/4 ounce .Caught my largest of the year that day .I plan on using it more often.

i lost one in some brush yesterday afternoon. it was my last 1/2 oz Tennessee Shad. i had just caught two spots out of a school while stroking it up off the bottom in 20+ fow.

*You are on the right track : The RES may be the best lipless crank for the yo-yo retrieve due to how it falls on slack line . The RES is also good on a straight retrieve or with a few slight hesitations added to each cast. Lastly ,  many will opt for the 1/4 oz. RES in early Fall as that best matches the shad hatch from the previous Spring - then switch to the larger 1/2 oz. & 3/4 oz. late in the Fall when bass are feeding up for Winter (You could probably skip the 1/4 oz. version now and pick up a few later for early Fall 2021) . I also believe the larger RES better match larger shad that were lucky enough not to be eaten as well as to better match the larger Gizzard shad that bass will key in on when feeding up for Winter . I like the Chrome Blue color or any RES color ending with the word "shad" such as Green Gizzard Shad , Tennessee Shad , Chartreuse Shad , etc. then for late Winter into Spring I switch to any of the red , orange , red / orange colors such as: Rayburn Red , Orange Craw , Chile Craw , etc.  craw colors in the 1/2 oz. size ... I hope this helps to guide you which RES's to pick up now and then the ones to add later .

@Russ E - This Exactly for me as well.

And 95% of it happens with the 1/2 oz bait.

I seldom use a 1/4 oz.  Most of the time its 1/2 or greater.  I like the red eye shad but lucky craft makes some in the 1/2 size body, but 5/8 and 3/4 weight.  I like these. Both for bottom burning, ripping out of grass, and bottom bumping kinda how russ and ajay described.

I'm back to using Red Eye Shads, after playing around with lots of other lipless baits the last few years.

They really are the best bang for the buck.

I use the half oz. 90% of the time. Fishes well from the bank out to 10 feet.

If I'm in super skinny water I use the 1/4, if I'm fishing deeper the 10 feet I'll use the 3/4.

My most productive lipless technique.....regardless of the bait....is to let it sink to the bottom and "slow roll" it with the rod pointed straight at the bait. Every couple cranks of the handle I do a subtle "sweep" of the rod to the side getting that bait to change it's vibration, then throw it the slack line, letting it sink back to the bottom and starting all over again with the "crank, sweep, sink" routine. If it hits grass I will rip it out, then kill it. They just do not seem to bite the "lift and fall" hopping technique here often....which is very odd, because they are all over that style of retrieve with a blade bait in cold water.

I was hitting grass on every cast yesterday and it was always bring in both trebles with 4” of grass. There was great vibration without the grass contact but once that little bit of grass was on the hooks I couldn’t feel any vibration. I would then give a hard jerk trying to clear off the grass but more often than not I was retrieving my lure without feeling it work. I’ve read where the lipless are best ripped through grass. What am I doing wrong? Or is it that the contact, ripping and reduced vibration with grass filled trebles a good thing? Lol

You could be fishing in chara algae . Google it . If thats the case then lipless baits will not work .

I solely use 3/8 oz ones. They just feel the best while being retrieved to me. No other reason than that.

The 2 tap tungsten models are next on my shopping list but at $9 each it’s gonna take a lil joy away when throwing them into thick stuff!!

is that a gold w/black back i see?

I think that’s the “grass” I was in @scaleface so it’s trouble?

If it is Chara then it is not a grass , its an advanced form of algae and has no root system . So any lure that contacts it cannot be ripped free . I love the stuff myself . I especially like spinnerbaits around the edges and over the top . Buzzbaits too . If it reaches the surface then I like  toads or frogs in warmer weather . I never use any lure  with a treble hook in it . Squeeze some next time and see if it has a skunky odor .

I fish from shore so water depth dictates what I throw. I used only the 1\2 oz for a long time and did well..but I recently started throwing a 1\4 and found certain applications for it.

  • Global Moderator

I fish the 1/2oz 95% of the time, the 1/4oz 4.5%, and the 3/4 that last 0.5%. I use a bunch of different retrieves but either a straight retrieve, or a lift and drop retrieve are my best ones.

I rarely reach for a standard RES anymore, it's almost always a 2tap. Trust me, they like the 2tap.

I am one who has not caught a thing on a RES, but I tear em up with a 1/2 Xcalibur one knock.

I bought a 2 tap in sexy shad to try that out with the Xcalibur being discontinued, ya I know there are Booyah knock offs but not in sexy shad or oxbow so hopefully the 2 tap works. I want to try some of the Yo Zuri ones too.
