Fire Craw and Hites Hot Craw Jackhammers

Featured Replies

I just received some Jackhammers in Fire Craw 1/2oz  and Hites Hot Craw 3/8 & 1/2.  BR has first shot at these if you are needing them.

Jackhammers

Fogy has been doing work here for me ?

I don’t want to come off as a jerk here, because I believe Siebert makes great products, but if there is a split ring involved then it’s inferior to the chatterbait.

*That depends in what you are looking for in the way of a bladed jig's action ? The Foggy starts up fast , has a wide wobble and hunts well (both attributes it shares with a Jack Hammer) . Some people say a SK Thunder Cricket is inferior to a Jackhammer - however the Thunder Cricket has a real tight wobble that I believe may be more ideal for cold water . Lose the skirt band with #24 AWG wire skirt tie at home and the Thunder Cricket is improved ... Think of it as the difference between a SK 1.5 square bill and a 1.5 flat sided square bill (wider wobble / better for warmer water ; tighter wobble / better for colder water) .

You get a different vibration from a bait with a split ring vs one directly connected. The direct connect is a sharper/faster vibration that moves in a straight line with little hunting action. The split ring baits have a wider range of motion with the blade, which results in a bigger thump and more hunting action. Personally, the split ring bait puts out the bigger thump that I think mimics a bigger baitfish and gets bigger bites for me. I've fished both styles a lot and the split ring bait has lapped the direct connect bait in the big fish department many times over.

I agree its 2 different actions...almost like 2 different lures all together. I would say that overall a chatter bait is more productive in cleaner water but a fogy or any bait with the split ring is more productive in stained to muddy water. The vibration on a fogy coupled with that hunt make it more productive in the sandy water I fish. Like I said two different tools..like a square bill and a lipless.

I can't remember who said it, but I was watching a BassU thing on chatterbaits and they basically said as much- if it has a split ring, it goes right in the trash.

Now, I'm sure there's a bit of hyperbole there, and I'm sure in many situations one with a split ring works just fine.  However, my time on the water is limited and I'm not taking any chances...

My issue with them is getting them to start vibrating right away and problems with them kinking over which doesn't let them vibrate at all.  Once they're vibrating on the retrieve they work fine, but those two issues are deal breakers for me.

I trust his opinion but I also trust my experience with them. When they are vibrating he’s absolutely right. They don’t fit the way I like to fish a vibrating jig though.
