Fix line twist on spinning reel?

Featured Replies

I usually fish heavier line on my spinning reels than most people and have never had a problem with it. But I recently bought some 12lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid and I'm having terrible line twist problems on my Pfluger President spinning reel. Any advice?

This is my weightless T-rigged senko setup only, I do run lighter line for drop-shots Etc..

Unless that's a 40 size - 12# is way too thick for it. My 35 size I ran 10# YZH, and that's about the limit for that reel. 30 size I'd keep to 8# max, 25 size would be 6# and 20 size would get 4#.

When on a boat strip off 1/2 the spool and drive around a bit then reel back on.

Tie the end to a swivel and walk off 100 feet, pull tight and reel back on.

Close the bail by hand after every cast

Okay, I'll downsize to 8 or 10 pound test. Or switch to braid, which everybody tells me is a must for spinning gear but I've never done it yet.

Take it from a guy who doesn’t use a spinning outfit...Braid is not a must for spinning gear.

What is, is the right line diameter for the spool size you’re using based on what technique you use it the most for.

That includes braid, mono (cough) or flouro.

I've never actually thought of it like that before, which is pretty dumb on my part considering how simple it is. I'll get a smaller line to match my spool and wait until the lake un-freezes so I can use it. ?

I have been using 6# Yo-zuri hybrid on my weightless Senko spinning setup for years now and have horsed some 5-6lb fish out of some muck. That said, yeah 12# is waaayyy to much.

Let’s say your reel are spooled with a size appropriate line for the spool and you start to develop line twist. What you can do (on land, driveway backyard) is tie on the end of your line a good quality snap swivel, can be an oversized one, attach the snap to a branch, nail in a tree or something like that than walk off 75 yards 50 yards and reel your Line in under some tension and this twist can sometimes be removed. I’m pretty anal about my line and do change more often than most but this does help.

I just drag it through the grass, and reel it back up with tension.

In general, guys HATE using snap swivels but I have used them my whole life. I wont fish a spinning rig without one. There are some very good ball bearing snap swivels available in black. Makes changing lure out fast and does not use up line. I just don't ever remember having line twist problems. I catch fish right along with my friends so I just don't see the problem.  Get some good snap swivels, the kind that lock, not the ones that close like a safety pin. They can pull open.

.010 diameter max for 3000 size spinning reel will be easier to manage. Spinning reels twist line.

Using braid reduces line memory. 20 lb braid with 12 lb leader is a option if 2 knots isn’t a issue.

Yo-Zuri Hybrid .006 lb is .010D.

Make sure your line roller on your bail is lubricated and spinning well. I’ve used yo-zuri 10# on 2500 sized reels no problem.

You could get away with 10# Yo-Zuri Ultra Soft if you like the Yo-Zuri.

6lb YZH is the same diameter (.01±.0004) as a lot of 10lb lines and probably has the same real-world tensile strength as a lot of 12lb lines. lol

Read again, OP is using 12lb YZH.

Last time this topic came up, I realized I've never experienced line twist - seen it on my friend's decades-old Penn loaded with heavy braid.

Warning - line roller editorial:

Shimano's line roller, the same from Stradic to Stella.  Only this is after cleaning all the white lithium grease.

Why does Shimano go to so much trouble to seal their line rollers?  Because they're made from brass.  Honestly, Tica uses a better line roller design than this.

When I saw this thing thing I replaced them all with MTCW no-seals, 2-BB line rollers.

IOS and Hedgehog offer their own version and full-bearing kits for Daiwa.

The other thing I do is fish my spinning tackle with a micro-swivel bite trace, which keeps the line continuously relaxing any twist while you fish.

I know what the OP said. I was providing additional context for the point you made when you mentioned that you were using 6lb YZH.

I’ve used a lot of quality mono over the years and for the most part have never really had issues with twist. Very minor issues at most.

There are many great Brands out there but SUNLINE SuperMono is the best I’ve ever used period. The 6-8# spinning setup I used the most, that’s all I use on them the last couple of seasons. Hands down the best mono I’ve ever used and I feel I’ve been using some good mono for years.

Can you compare this to Sunline Defier Armilo?

No. I don’t know what that is.

It's another Sunline monofilament.
