Seasons good for underspins

Featured Replies

Does anyone have on opinion on underspins in pre or post spawn? What time of the year do they really perform well?

Thanks,

I use an underspin when there are a lot of baitfish around and I want my bait to stand out which more often then not is in the fall when theres a lot of small bait around and sometimes late winter early spring.

This might not be the answer you’re looking for, but they work year round. Underspins and soft swimbaits mimic what bass mostly feed on; baitfish. Sure, there are certain times a year where they may be more willing to chase a bait. That’s when you consider varying your retrieve/cadence depending on the mood of the fish. An under spin will be money year round. You can do so much with it. Jig off bottom, creep on the bottom, straight retrieve, burn them closer to surface and the list goes on and on.

Also, don’t get too caught up with post spawn, pre spawn, yadda yadda etc..Not all fish are going to be spawning at the same time. Some may have spawned while others are still in what we would call a “pre-spawn” stage. Present your bait appropriately to whichever group of fish you’re targeting. Hope this helps.

Thats my opinion :)

They work best in the colder weather months for me but are good again in the heat of the summer also.

For me depends on bait and weedgrowth -- I get bit on underspins in pre-spawn and mid-late summer, but in different places.

I use them mostly in late fall to early spring, mainly because I can , due to the weeds dying off in the colder months. My home lake gets too weedy to use them the rest of the year...

This makes sense, I feel like they would really be good in the fall then because bass are trying to stock up for the winter by eating baitfish

Year round in clear water.  I do very well with them in ultra clear quarries, especially with high skies and lots of bait fish swimming around.

Another vote for year round, but I always use a 3.5" on a belly weighted hook/underspin in the prespawn. In my lakes the shad are small, and they love it.

In my opinion underspins are great all year around if your are in some what murky water.

I use them every day. Usually with strike king rage swimmer.
