This sounds silly but evidently you can't buy lead drop shot weights in NY.  That reg must have come about while I was on my fishing hiatus.  So what's the most cost effective alternative?

By tungsten in bulk.  There are a lot of vendors on Facebook, eBay, etc 

Save your time and buy from Seibert Outdoors.  Mike is a sponsor and his sinkers are top tier quality and affordable.

These guys are great.  Good quality and good prices but it does take awhile to get. 

can we send them to you?  I mean, lead ones.

 

JoyFish has some decent pricing on tungsten. best I've seen, but still mild sticker shock.

This is the only place I use. I usually order a lot at one time and it sure saves me. I probably have 500 or more tungsten weights on hand in various weights and kinds.

Well, I got a lil carried away with 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 1/2 & 3/4 oz bullet weights. Then add on the other weights and I have for drop shot, jika, and carolina rigs and I have enough to last a while. I gave my buddy 15 5/16 weights the other day because he didn't have any. Now that I really think about it, I probably only have 300 or so, I over estimated (I think). LOL

Steel rust and tears up your line, hard pass.

 

Brass would be the only thing I'd consider other than tungsten and only in smaller sizes. Once you get past something like 1/4oz, they're huge. 

I use steel for drop shot weights. Either the steel tear drop dipsy weights or a bullet weight to a split ring. Occasionally I'll add a clacker bead but I'm not sure it matters. I use 1/16 and 1/8 ounce steel weights for texas rigging but switch to tungsten for heavier weights.
