Daiwa Tatula SV TW is kinda loud and not as smooth as I was expecting.

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a video or something of what smooth vs geary would be like? I just got a Tatula SV TW and it’s the first low profile casting reel I’ve ever had, of course I stumble upon this thread and my anal tendencies have me questioning how it should feel

I really like how the Daiwa fits my hand, the handles it comes with feels good, and it casts a mile. It’s an issue of when I reel it back in it’s not as smooth as I had expected. It’s not horrible but for how much it costs I would expect smoother. I’ll send it back and have them send me another and if it’s the same then I’ll have to figure out what to do after that.

^THIS^ Three Super Duties, two Tournament MP's, and a $99 LFS. 100% happy with all. Pro SP will be here tomorrow.

I went back to a Shimano Curado. I plan on grabbing the 150 MGL for frogging when they come in stock

I sent the SV TW back and they’re sending me a new one. Hopefully it’s better, otherwise I’ll be looking for a Curado. My father just got a killer deal on a 70 mgl and it’s awesome. If the 150 MGL was available now I probably would’ve gone with that.

I’ll be honest the Daiwa worked as advertised but on 2 separate occasions the thumb bar would close midcast and afterwards would make a terrible noise feeling in. Also I’ve yet to find a reel that palms as well as Shimano.

A reel can be both smooth and geary sounding.  All gear trains make noise, and generally speaking, higher ratio gears tend to be noisier than lower ratios.  If you aren't feeling any rough spots when turning the handle, you're good to go.

This happens when the clutch doesn't fully engage.  If the clutch is only partially engaged, the main gear and pinion gear aren't centered and the teeth aren't meshing properly, giving you the rough feel and noise.  This isn't exclusive to Daiwa, I've had it happen across all makes and models.  It even happens to some of my own reels every now and then, and a quick turn of the handle will get the gears back to where they should be.  My guess is this happens when the crown of the pinion gear doesn't seat properly with the spool bearing pin.

Palmability is going to vary person to person. I know a lot of people that love the tiny casting reels because they're supposed to be so easy to palm. They're too small in my hands and I end up with hand cramps from trying to hold them. The last couple Gens of Revos felt odd in my hand, like they were too long, and they pushed on a nerve in my hand that made them uncomfortable to fish. Nothing wrong with them, but comfort should be a big deciding factor when selecting a reel. If the Shimanos feel more comfortable to you, you'll likely fish them more and better. The larger frame of the Tatulas reminds me of the old Curado 200B that I fished so much growing up and is very comfortable to fish with so I use them for about everything.

After having issues with 3 Curado in a row I just went with an entirely different brand. I picked up the Daiwa Tat SV TW 2020 model honestly due to how many good reviews it had. Now I used to have a Fuego CT and it was crazy smooth I felt like, but this one I can sorta feel the gears meshing together inside if that makes sense. Also it’s kinda loud on the retrieve compared to my other reels. I can’t tell if that’s the main shaft gears or the worm gear though.

Anyone else have issues with these reels right out of the box? Does it need to be serviced?

My Fuego is louder when reeling than expected. I know this is not others' experience because it was recommended by board members. I was a tad disappointed, but it seems to work perfectly otherwise. Last time out I dialed down the mag control and I had to go retrieve my Spook from the trees. ? The thing can cast a country mile. That makes me a little happier. I guess as long as it functions as it should I can live with it.

I have 3 Tournament MBs and a $99 LFS. This is gospel.

  • 2 years later...

I know this is an old topic but I wanted to mention something about this in case anyone else makes the same mistake I did and assumed it was the reels issue lol.

I thought my tatula sv sounded geary and wasn’t smooth on the rod either.

i put the line on wrong. I put it UNDER the bar underneath the line guide instead of over it. That’s all it was. ? so check that. Make sure you’ve got the line on right. I didn’t. Lol
