Hello from upstate NY Finger Lakes

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

joined today after a couple months's worth of lurking. Getting into kayak fishing after buying an Old Town PDL kayak primarily for duck hunting. So far have put together some baitcast combos and am slowly picking up tackle. We've got good bass fishing in Cayuga Lake, so eager to learn more.

Spent the week putting together a kayak trailer, will try to post a pic when I get enough posts under my belt to share photos.

Looking forward to meeting folks here.

Jim

Hey Jim

Welcome!

I'm at the northend on Conesus and also a kayak fisher

Welcome Jim! I’m also new and from upstate NY, just south of the Adirondacks. I just ordered a Pelican Trailblazer 100 NXT kayak, it should arrive in about two weeks. Next week I travel to Canton for a week for work, right near the St Lawrence River. Unfortunately it’s my understanding that even C&R isn’t allowed on that body of water before bass season opens.

Nice to meet you all. Feel fortunate to have been able to locate two kayaks, one for me and one for my wife, it took a bit of online searching for sure. We also have a camp in the Adirondacks near Old Forge and Eagle Bay, eager to get out on the Stillwater Reservoir this summer.

thanks! where in northern Michigan are you? I hunt Michigan for grouse nearly every year, both the lower peninsula and across the U.P. One of my setters came from Alpena and the other is from Crystal Falls. Love the UP.

I'm a few minutes south of the bridge up in Otsego County.

And my dogs enjoy running those grouse around the back forty too.

always manage to camp around Gaylord or Grayling the first night of every trip. Bought a truck camper a couple of years ago and it's really changed the way I operate (for the better). Took three+ weeks last year and looking to do the same again this fall. Only reason I came home is it got awfully cold and snowy around October 25 or so. ?

Welcome to the forum

Hey Jim, I'm from the Rochester area but keep my boat and do most of my fishing in and around Fair Haven/Lake O. Also recently bought an Old Town Predator PDL but I'm in the thick of shipping/supply uncertainty so I don't expect to actually receive the kayak for another month or more. My pessimistic side thinks Fall time. oh well! welcome aboard, this is one of my favorite places to kill time while I'm on the clock.

great to hear from you. The back kayak on the trailer is their Bigwater PDL which is the updated Predator. I got it through Appomattox River Company after looking all over nearby for a month or so. Needed camo especially for hunting, that's what made it more hard to find. Now I guess they're sold out of everything so I feel pretty fortunate to have pulled the trigger when I did. The dealer in Old Forge said he couldn't get anything in until fall at the earliest.

My wife has had the two dogs on hers already both paddling and standing up. My balance is not nearly as good as hers so I have yet to take one of the dogs on board yet. Have to start practicing soon though.

Hey Jim.  We're headed to Cayuga in a couple of weeks.  Got a pontoon and plan to do some fishing.  Any advice?  Plan to head out into the open water (not fish as much by the shore) between 9-3 each day.  Not the best fishing time/place I know but any insights are appreciated.

Chris, sorry I'm just seeing this now, have been in the Adirondacks the last week or so and not on the computer much. have you made your trip yet? saw a lot of folks in boats at the north end Saturday when driving by, south of Fayette there are some coves that seemed to attract some attention. it's a big lake and I'm just slowly getting to know it. there was a lot of debris in the water a couple of weeks ago from all the rain in July, I think that has slowly gotten better. Good luck on your trip, let us know how it goes!
