Shallow-running Suspending Jerkbait

Featured Replies

The Mirrolure Mirrodine is a popular saltwater bait here in Florida. It is 2 5/8” long and weighs 3/8 oz. I have attached a picture. This is a lipless, suspending jerkbait. It suspends about 6” below the surface in fresh water and stays at that depth when it is jerked and retrieved. I’ve had some luck with it in fresh water and I’m looking to buy some similar baits for freshwater bass and peacock bass. I’ve looked at the specifications for several freshwater baits and haven’t found any that suspend that close to the surface. Many suspend at 4 feet and deeper. I fish in a shallow grassy pond and would like to find one or two good jerkbaits that will suspend closer to the surface and I would appreciate any recommendations.

Thank you, A-Jay. I'll give that a try.

@A-Jay, after watching a few utoob vids it looks like they sink a bit on the pause, do you find they suspend out of the box or in certain water temp range or do you tweak them to suspend?

Damiki Slim Jack 8" - 16" and produces

Or buy more mirro lures, great finishes, but need new hooks. I have 1 in silver / blk. back. Have not got it wet much though.

Bait's designed to sink a foot or so I guess,

but then they suspend very nicely right there.

I change the hardware & plus size the hooks, so my baits might go 6 inches deeper ?

The magic is the sweet little roll/shimmy on the pause.

It takes a second to happen so wait for it.

But be careful, you might get your arm broke.

So you jerk it a few times and pause, in the pause it waits a second and shimmys down a foot or so? That sounds killer!!!! That would be great for shallow, grassy ponds.

Does not shimmy on the fall.

There is no 'fall'.

The bait has a slight side to side roll as it comes to a stop - In Place.

#magic

btw - I fish it on mono or braid & a mono leader -

Seems a FC mainline will goofball quite a bit of what the bait wants to do.

Ok I went back and re read the original description of what you put and understand now. It makes me want to get one even more now. What rod are using?

Duo Realis Rozante 77SP. It's a fantastic shallow water jerk bait.

I find that a shallow suspending JB is  better in theory than in practice, but I usually tweek a Long A or Shadow Shad Rap when I get the notion.

Same set ups I throw my jerkbaits; except I don't use FC.

Either M spinning gear with 10 Braid & mono leader or M casting gear with 10 or 12 mono.

Excellent I'm all set then. Ive been thinking about something like this because I doubt many pond guys use these around where I fish.

I still throw Smithwick Suspending Rattlin Rogue with great success.

The Ima Flit 100 is the one I usually fish if I need a really shallow running suspending jerkbait.

Also Flashminnow  110 and Daiwa TD Minnow.
