First casting rod!

Featured Replies

Hello everyone! I'm new to this place so I hope I'm doing this right. I am now stocking up on supplies for next season and stepping in to the world of mid range rods. I've already got a 7 medium tatula and I'd like to get a caster since I've never used one. I'm looking for an all around player...something that will work spinners, cranks, and poppers well. I'm thinking something fast with a soft tip? Please let me know guys! Thanks

What’s your budget? If you like your Tatula you could get it in a caster. They have a 7’1” MHF that would be a good all round rod. And are you looking for a reel as well?

Budget is around 150..200 is max. And yes I am getting a reel. Was looking at the tatula caster reels...but I don't know anything about casters lol

150..200 is for rod itself by the way

So many to choose from. Another Tatula would definitely get you by. For 200 and below, I would definitely consider the Dobyns Kaden 7’3” med/heavy moderate/fast action. Incredible spinnerbait rod for the money. If you’re not target casting in tight quarters with cranks, it will work well for squarebills to your lighter deep divers that don’t pull too hard. Poppers might be tough on a 7’3” depending on your height and your popper technique. Another great option would be Tatula Elite 7’2” medium heavy Randy Howell…..might be hard to find.

@Dpatches Also, St Croix Victory series is a diverse rod line. If I were in your shoes, I’d call up St Croix & Dobyns and consult with them.

I dont think I would have a hard time with a 7'3 as I am almost 6'3...and I was looking into dobyns. I think they had one call the all around? Was in the fury line

Correction...it was a falcon lowrider.

An Abu Garcia rod and a Mitchell 300 reel.  I still have the reel after 55 years.

I'd say a 7'0" - 7'3" Med Heavy rod will do the trick.  That's like that the crescent wrench of bass fishing.  You can throw a whole lotta lures on one of those.  I think I have at least 4 in my boat. LOL

St. Croix, Okuma, and Dobyns are all quality brands that have rods in your budget range. I'd throw in Denali and the Shimano Curado rods into the mix to round out your choices.

I recommend Dobyns too. They're the only rod brand I choose to use anymore. But remember if you go Dobyns, they run a power lighter than stated. The 4 power, which they list as Heavy, is a Medium Heavy by almost all other standards; the 4 power is the Dobyns "do it all" rod.

I did not know that...this is why I need this site lol. I do beleive im goin with dobyns....and I think a tatula caster...from what another member told me they are easy for beginners to get my casting skills up

Tatula casters are pretty user-friendly, if you can swing it, Tatula sv (or any other sv spooled Daiwa) are SUPER user-friendly.

Daiwas with the SV spool are especially easy on beginners, but the Magforce Z braked reels aren't too hard to learn on either.  As suggested, go 4 power if you elect to purchase a Dobyns.

The Falcon 6'10" H-ModFast (also known as the Head Turner) is another excellent option in both the Lowrider and Expert series.  Here's a thread on the Expert.

get out before its too late!!!

Your 1st casting rod & reel is usually the brand youbstay with for years. My suggestion is choose either a Daiwa or Shimano both good quality companies. Tatula rod & reel combo will be well balanced and perform for years. Any rod & reel within your budget price will be a good choice. MHF or MHXF 7’-7’4” is very popular.

My first casting rod was an ugly stick and I sure as heck didn’t stay with that, lol. But they get the job done!

Outstanding rods at their price point. Better blanks than some rods costing three times as much.

Hope you didn’t pay the op’s Price point $150-$200 for a tomato stick.

Tom

Reels staying with Daiwa or Shimano would be Tatula CT or Shimano SLX MGL 70 both good performers at the price.

No indeed! LOL. If I was Matt Robertson using the tomato stick would be cool.

Not putting a Tatula reel on a Tatula rod seems demonic soooo, do that

This is the exact reason I haven’t bought a Tatula rod, I have a Curado 150 MGL that needs a rod and I can’t bring myself to put it on a Tatula haha

I have a Daiwa Fuego CT100XS  on a Falcon Lowrider All ‘Round Fast (7’ MH/F). It’s a nice (real nice) rod for the price. It’s set up as my soft plastics Texas rig combo, but Ive used it with spinnerbaits and jigs as well.

A brand I keep forgetting about is Okuma.  Probably because I only have the Helios 7' MF casting rod.  Liked it well enough to buy a second while it was still on closeout.  One of the few rods I have doubles of.  There are a few reviews on this site on Okuma products.  Reviews are quite favorable.  You might want to check out the TCS, Helios SX, and the EVX.  I have 4 of their casting reels.  I feel I got good value for my money.  I especially like the Helios Air.   It's a favorite reel.
