I’ve got some spinnerbaits and jigs from various brands I would like to wire tie. The hope is that if I do it now, I won’t have skirts falling off a year from now if they sit in the tackle box. I imagine it’s relatively easy (?) but don’t know what kind and size of wire to use? 

Its pretty easy...just get some 24 ga. wire at the hardware store....couple of needle nose and a pair of dikes....2 or 3 wraps, twist and cut.

It is normally called floral wire.  I have it in gray, green and copper.

I use green floral wire too.  I just wrap above the rubber a couple of times.

Hobby Lobby has a pretty good assortment of colors

Do you just want it snug? I imagine tightening too much could cut the skirt material?

Yeah, it's a feel thing. I wrap it around about 6 times snuggly, then snug the tags and twist 4 times. after a while you get a feel for it. Most of the craft stores have a good selection of copper wire.

I don’t just want it snug, I want it tight.  I wrap twice then take two pairs of pliers and pull it tight and start the twist.  I normally finish the twist by hand.

Use fluorocarbon line and a simple granny knot;  you already have it on hand.  Quick, easy, works great, don't worry about the correct guage or color of wire.

I fish brackish water and prefer to use tiny plastic cable ties vs wire.  I just did 4 swimming jigs I am taking to Florida next week.  No rusting or rotting off.  I put the head of the cable tie on the bottom side of the jig.

I have done this and then used a file to smooth out the head. It works but is not clean looking and I prefer wire.

Braid is a better choice.

I'm gonna market JDM sacrificial anodes for jigs....  

 

I use braid.

 

Take two twist ties and wrap the skirt up and around the jig head, and around the hook in order to keep it out of the way.

 

Lay a 12" length of 20lb or higher braid flat on the table. With the hook facing up, lay the jig centered and perpendicular on top of the braid's length with the braid between the band and the jig head.

 

Wrap the braid around twice, then cinch it down with a single overhand knot.

 

Adjust the tension of the wraps by pulling on the tags until the skirt flares and you feel it begin to lock down. It will not cut the skirt. The single knot usually does not slip, but if it does, it and the second knot will keep the wraps tight.

 

Once adjusted, top it off with 8 more overhand knots which will create a knot tag.

 

Put a dab of superglue on the knot tag, then wipe off the excess.

 

Cut off the flying tags, snip off the band, and you're done. Maybe a minute total time.

That sounds like a winner! I have plenty of 40lb braid and some 20 I believe. I think this will be the way to go, honestly never crossed my mind. Thanks guys!

Oh man, something else I  thought I invented. I do very much the same thing, but I put the jig on a tying vise.

Cool, man. Normally I'd say the "great minds" cliche' thing, but I have the IQ of a tree frog.

I use the green coated floral wire too.  A couple wraps, a few twist and a cut and tuck and done deal. Just made myself a note to do that to a few jigs soon.
