If you were to buy just one color, what is your go to color for any water clarity what blades...what size? 

Stanley orginal vibreshaft white, double gold willowleaf, red head, 3/8 oz 

Strike King 1/2oz nickel willows sexy shad  head and skirt

War eagle screamin eagle with white skirt, gold head, gold willows

Well I went on Nichols website to refresh myself on what they have because if I could only use one spinnerbait, it'd be a Nichols... and come to discover that I can't find their custom shop anymore and their offerings are now more slim, including no more standard single colorado :(.

 

Well that's just no fun. 

 

My basic idea is I want a 1/2oz single colorado with a bullet head, something like a chartreuse, grey, and white skirt, with a half and half silver/gold, size #4.5 blade. I can't pick between a silver and gold blade so I picked both. 

 

I don't like anything on the market now out of the package for single colorado's. The closest is this one, a 1/2 oz covert. But I ain't happy about the blade size. 

 

I already feel old. Some of my favorite stuff is going away.

Is the 3/8oz the most common size? I would assume if you wanted deeper you'd go with 1/2 or 3/4? My style of fishing spinnerbaits is to use 30lb braid to a 17lb Fluoro leader and burn it over grass...I use a trailer, 6th Sense Divine Swimbait. 

I'd likely go with a 1/2oz. white/chartreuse, chrome Colorado/Willow bladed one.

IMO, you don't need to use a leader when fishing moving baits and the only reason I could justify it would be if I were using a fast action rod.  In that instance, I'd use a mono leader in 12lb. for a bit of stretch.

I want to keep the lure higher in the water column because I fish grassy water. I use either a 7:1 or 8:1 so I can fish higher in the column. It seems the fish don't have as long to make a desicion and see if there is line attached and the force of some of the strikes, it makes it nice to have a little extra cushion in the form of some heavier pound test. I've been turned on to 30lb braid to 17 or 15lb leaders by the guys at Tactical Bassin. I hate leaders in general, but I have seen the benefits of it. I tend to catch more fish when I use them. No rhyme or reason it just works. 

Okay so you are not looking for an all-purpose spinnerbait but rather one well suited for burning over grass?

just wanted to ask the question to clarify so somebody else who burns spinnerbaits can fill us in

That's a good one, but I'd do a tandem.  

A 3/8 Booyah, in the same configuration gets bit most places I go. I prefer gold over silver, but that's mostly in my head, a #4 1/2 or #5 willow behind a #3 colorado would be my stranded on an island choice, though I prefer other combinations most times in the real world.

I'm sure this varies with the area of the country and style of fishing.  Here in Florida my best "all around" spinnerbait would be a tandem 3/8 oz. bait with a #3 1/2 Colorado front blade and a #4 willow rear blade with a high quality ball bearing swivel.  The wire would be thin to make as much vibration as possible.  The blades would be highly polished gold or silver plated.  I would carry two baits, one with all gold blades and one with all silver.  The gold bait would have a chartreuse and white skirt.  The silver bait would have a white skirt. I would pull this bait with a 5/1 casting reel to slow the bait down and pull it as close to cover as possible.  These days 90% of my bass are caught this way.

I pour my own . The lure I use over 90 percent of the time is a 1/2 ounce head . Thats the weight that my spinnerbait rod cast best , which is the most  important aspect of   spinnerbait fishing .Willow /colorado  blades , a dull bait fish skirt , not bright  will catch me more fish all year long . In Spring though , I want a bright skirt and slightly larger blades . I fish mostly dingy water and like to fish spinnerbaits Jimmy Houston style . Close to the surface where I can barely see the blades flashing. The spinnerbait pictured is what I throww the most . 4.5 gold willow , 2  copper colorado . Blade size differs by manufacturers . I fish this slow and  over grass all the time . No problem, Just hold the rod tip a little high .

Most of these baits come in the package with a # 3 1/2" Colorado front blade and a #4 1/2" or larger rear willow.  I have been downsizing my rear blades for years to make them run a little slower and deeper.  Spinnerbaits do not work for me pulled fast near the surface. If I want to fish faster or shallower, I would use a blade bait.

When they are chasing bait up high, a double willow with smallish silver blades in something whitish or Sexy Shadish skirt reeled as fast as you can is usually what they want. Doesn't surprise me it's not a big thing in FL, or other mostly natural shallow weedy lakes elsewhere.

How many strands in the skirt?  Full skirt from the factory or thin the skirt out some?
