I know they have a 735 that is the famous frog rod, but I want to stay at 7'.  I have this rod (704) as my dedicated work horse rod for texas rigs, jigs, and swim jigs, but wanted your take on how it may work as a frog rod?

 

My frog rod now is a 7' Lews TP1 M/H that plays above its power, and I have never had an issue with it.  It cast well and is easy to work.  I have just been so impressed with the Fury line that I may switch all my rods over.

So I love frog fishing, I've used 7' mh rod before and did okay  with it. I now use a 7'3"h and have been for last 7yrs. Now my son who is 16 throws a 7'h (Berkley  lightning  shock) which is good for him, he's not as tall as me and let's him get leverage.  The reason I moved up to the 7'3"h was lost fish I couldn't get leverage on. A 7'6" is too long, so swapped to the 7'3" and well fell in love with it. It does  everything I want it to do and more. Now for my rod of choice,  it's a Falcon Amistad  Special in the old bucco line  and have a replacement  in the new sr.  The 735 is heavier action then yours which is a 4 power.  The problem with a 7' is you may need to move up in power  but you'll loose some of the action as where a 7'3" can have the same tip action but shut  down and give you the leverage  to move bigger fish out of heavy mats. You may need to find a rod 1 power higher that will give you some tip action in the 7' length.  But then if it's not a dedicated  frog rod and limited, fish what you got. I did but loosing a few 4+ pound fish made me switch.

IMNSHO the Fury 704C is not a good frog rod. 

Go throw frogs on your 704 and see how you like it. At least you’ll get a better idea of what power rod will best meet your needs.

I have a Kaden 714 and both Sierra and Champ 734s. I use a Champ 735 for frogs.

After using 7’ rods for years I’ve come to like the extra length of the 7’3” rods.

I have never struggled with the TP1 that I have now, but I am looking for something a little lighter. My hook up ratio has honestly been very solid.  Honestly, I would be switching for the sake of it, and just wanted your takes. 

 

I remember watching a Dean Rojas video where he speaks to only using a M/H power frog rod, and I have taken his lead.

The problem with finding a frog rod is that you need a MH tip to adequately cast a lighter hollow body frog a decent distance, and the softer tip to walk-the-dog on retrieve. But then you need a Heavy backbone when you hook up and/or get caught in the slop. There are rods that have this unique combination of actions specifically for frogging, but are more expensive than your budget. 

Agreed. This will be a dedicated frog rod, and the main difference I am looking for is a lighter set up for the longer days of throwing it. 

 

Like I stated, my set up works and has worked well and I have just been impressed with the Dobyns line, but they dont make a 705 or it would be a no brainer. 

The 704C will throw a frog in open water and it will do that well, but if you introduce thick lily pads it will not have enough power.

 

You can get the 705c in the Sierra line (which is a worthwhile step up from the Fury) or the 715C in the Kaden which is 7'1".

I have a Fury 734c that I use for frogging and its been great. Even in the thickest lily pads around, I was able to drag a 10lb snapping turtle on 30lb braid up to the bank to get it unhooked.

I use a Kaden 715C for frogs and a couple of other things.

I use Dobyns Rods for my Frog fishing. I too was looking for a 7 ft. rod so I called Dobyns Rods for Advice. The man I spoke with recommended  the Champion XP DC 736C FH. I ended up purchasing & in Heavy Cover that 6 power gets the job done. I now have another one & two Champion XP DC 735C FH that I use for jigs. Both these are excellent rods. For fishing in heavy cover or slop  You will not go wrong with the Champion XP DC 736C FH.

You did not say what type of water you fish but a 4 power rod might be a problem getting good hook sets with those heavy duty hooks on a Frog

I use a Sierra 735 for frogs , most people would probably like a Champ 735 for frogs better - but I have very fast reflexes and the slightly softer tip with slightly more parabolic bend of the Sierra series helps me not ****** the frog away from bass using no stretch braid .

Sierra. Kaden, Champ XP, Daiwa, Shimano ……. The point I was trying to make is that IME a heavier rod is better.

Imho a 704 is a tad to soft.

Get a Champion 705c. Been my frog rod for ages. I like 7' frog rods too.

It’s the pits trying to select a rod when you haven’t tried it in your own hands.  I can only make a suggestion based on what I have fished or still fish. Here’s what I have confidence in with three budget options:

 

Champion DC736XP FH.  Extremely active tip that transitions to big power quickly. The tip allows you to walk the frog and the power to move big fish and buried fish easily.

 

Kaden K715C  Very similar tip to power but the rod has slightly less power than the 736

 

Fury  735C.  Slower action and the lock up takes place deeper into the blank but it has ample power.  This model makes a good jig rod.
