Featured Replies

I’m a kayaker thru and thru.

but this seems likes a good option.   Ocean capability for sure.  It would be cool out there rock fishing the Pacific Ocean.

and bass fishing big lakes?   I think a spot lock trolling motor would help

Any Jet ski fishermen/women here?

Braap!

My buddy fishes off a regular ole jet ski, they are handy here for running up thru shallow shoals where regular prop boats can’t get

First I've seen one of those.

I can't see a trolling motor in that pic, that would be a problem for me.

I think they would be great for places where you are drift fishing.  For casting down a bank a little less so.  Maybe you could anchor and fish off shore locations.

Google "Jetski Brian". He fishes the bay and ocean off of VA and now the Bahamas.

What are the advantages of one over a kayak? I can only think of one but I hate these things so I'm biased. Anyone can add to the list.

Advantages:

1. Speed

Disadvantages:

Everything else. Heavy, expensive to buy, no hands-free operation at all, tougher than storing a yak, needs a trailer, need to register it, needs maintenance and maybe repairs, loud, needs gas and oil, not good in shallow water (gets stuck and sucks up debris), pollutes the water, .....

May as well get a nice jon boat and have 10k or more left over..

It may limit the number of lakes you can use it on.  In Oklahoma, a lot of lakes don't allow "personal watercraft", where they will allow bigger and more power bass boats and smaller kayaks.  Plus they can't be used at night, which means you'll have to wait for the sun to rise before going out, and have to back in before the sun sets, unlike most other craft.

I actually fished out of one of those (Seadoo FishPro) on Stick Marsh 13. Here's my writeup and video about the experience:

Fishing brackish water within the shallow mangroves and such I could see this being a fun toy, but no way it could replace a real boat once you have one.
