I d**n near won a local tournament this past weekend on a wacky rig.. missed winning it by three lbs and I only had 4 keepers all smallmouth… Biggest was a 3.10… Around here that is huge

 I catch almost all of my Wacky Senko bass while the bait is motionless on the bottom or maybe after a very slight movement, but hardly ever on the retrieve. I wonder if others have had this same experience?

I don’t throw Senkos, but I catch a bunch on wacky worms while retrieving - as well as while they’re falling, and while they’re sitting on bottom. You have to be intentional in your presentation. Probably the most overlooked aspect in bass fishing ?

It would be helpful to me if  you would explain how you do an "intentional presentation" with a Wacky Worm?

“Intentional” refers to how I need to adjust depth and speed to get bit. I catch a lot of fish on wacky by using it like a topwater with a steady rhythmic retrieve right on the surface. Other days, maybe a slightly slower twitching retrieve 6” to 12” under the surface might work better. When reeling in after fishing it deeper, suddenly stop snd twitch it a few times mid column before reeling back in to tempt any followers. Fish it faster along the bottom by using a weighted jig head, or rigged wacky on a drop shot with a shorter leader. Catch them on the drop by shaking the bait on the fall. The fish will tell you their positioning and disposition if you give them the opportunity to do so. Once you know that, you’re golden. Keep repeating what’s working, or switch to a bait more traditionally suited for the specific situation.

I ALWAYS have a wacky worm handy on the river!  Simple rig, weightless with a 2/0 ewg hook.  Reason for that hook is that I can switch from the WW to a fluke easily without having to retie.  Will sometimes add a split-shot if I need to get to the bottom.  4" and 5" Yum Dingers, and buy them in the 30 packs, you'll go through a bunch of 'em.

Had this guy take a wacky worm this weekend.  Thought I had a PB smallie on the hook..

Been deadlifting a 4" yum dinger in heavy current down to the tailouts in my local river.  Water is very clear and averages 5 to 15 ft.

I'm using natural colours (clear, white, and translucent pink)

Very simple dead drift presentation slowly reeled to have as little slack as possible. Its almost impossible to deal with in crosscurrents and typically soft bites. But big smallies tend to hold on long enough to deform the (Hivis braid) line in the water. If I feel weight I swing hard on my (stC 6-6 triumph l/f) spinning rod. I'm probably near 90% success on my hooksets and even a #2 smallie is a blast to fight.
