I'm sure I'll get all sorts of answers here but I'm looking for suggestions of affordable options for prescription sunglasses. My insurance benefits will only cover one pair of glasses per year so priority goes to regular glasses and I'm left paying out of pocket for sunglasses. Even if I did use insurance VSP requires you to use their labs and their lenses which is sub par to premium brands. 

I currently have ray ban aviators with polarized lenses but they're honestly horrible for cutting through water glare. I know there's tons of decent options for non prescription sunglasses but just wondering what y'all recommend. 

Have you considered polarized clip-on's for your regular prescription glasses? 

 

They are cheap and I use them on my prescription glasses.

If your walmart has a vision center, check with them. I had to pay for mine also and they were about half the price I found anywhere else.

Costco Prescription + online company to fill the prescription is what I plan to do this year.

As other have said, Walmart, Costco and BJ’s vision centers are reasonably priced. 
 

Other options: 

 

Contact lenses, then you can get any sunglasses you want.

 

Go for new glasses every 2 years. 1st year have insurance cover the regular glasses, 2nd get the sunglasses.

My wife and I both carry vision care. I get my glasses covered under my insurance and the sunglasses under hers.

Tried three different types of weighted lenses as I've got astigmatism.

 

None of them would 'settle' in place...give up.

 

Now I'm on tri-focals - so resigned to wearing glasses the rest of my life.

 

I use flip ups cause I can get them for $20-25 for 4 pair, each a different color...and yes, polarized. Can't afford prescription sunglasses even from the discount places.

Haha no LensCrafters. They were fine until VSP made new lenses using their in house lab with their in house polarized lenses which are crap.

That makes more sense, cause if I didn't need prescriptions, I'd still wear those dark amber lenses for everything.

Look into Transition xtractive polarized . They turn dark and polarize outdoors . I dont have them  yet but my next scrips will be  those . One set of glasses and be done with it . Clip ons , you get this super annoying side glare .  I wear photochromatic any way and they get    dark .

Transitions don't transition enough, hopefully they have changed.

The ones I have get pretty   dark . 

I wear progressives which always cost more but I literally just got a pair of polarized RX from Zenni to try that was $105 to my door.  I also have bought from eyebuydirect, they have Ray-ban and Oakley. I can get Oakley progressive polarized for around $185 shipped.  I dont have eye insurance so I pay straight up.
