GLX 844 vs Legend Xtreme Heavy

Featured Replies

Curious how these compare in power and sensitivity.

I only have experience with a St Croix Legend X (Green Rod) and its stout!  Feels like a heavy and not a MH compared to other rods I have so I am wondering how these compare

I don't know the SC legend X, but my 904 does not in any way feel stout.  The MBR action was quite a bit softer in the tip than I expected, but was pleasantly surprised by the backbone once I got into it and I get why there are so many fans of it.

The 'croix heavy will have noticeably more power than the Loomis 4 power.  I used glx 844's as my primary jig/worm, frog, and c-rig rods for many years.  I'd get the Loomis for it's taper....can do 3/16oz on up.

I own both a Legend Elite heavy, X MH, and Xtreme MHXF. I also own a NRX 893, 873, and sold a 893 and 894 MBR. Croix is not messing around with their ratings. If it says 1.5oz it will happily chuck that weight day in and day out.

The H Croix is a frog, punching, 1 oz swim bait stick. It is has serious power. I use my for magdraft freestyles, 3/4 footballs, and punching.

For the range your looking 1/4 to 1, your best bet is an 7’1 MHXF in the Elite or X lines. They will balance better, and have top notch components. The GLX is a great stick, but I’ve heard too many complaints about the handle and reel seat for me to even buy one to test. The NRX 894 I had was very light but wasn’t as mod fast as I’d want with a reaction rod.

What specifically are you trying to do with the rod? That will help everyone guide you a bit better.

I have SC LE MHF, SC LE HF, 844, & 904 as blanks built up custom.

The SC H is way more stout than the Loomis.  The MH has nearly the power the 4 series Loomis rods do but with a softer tip.  I find the MH SC to be a more flexible rod due to this...but it isn't as good at heavier presentations.  The H SC is seriously stout.  I use that one for pitching heavy jigs/trigs in thick grass.

So as others have said, depends a bit on your purpose.  Power wise they could all work, soft tip wise I'd rate them SC MH, 844, 904, SC H

Maybe posting rod and reel questions in the Rods, Reels, and Line forum will net more response...

I have the 844C (older version) and love it for just about anything except crankbaits. I also have a MH St. Croix Legend Elite.  These two rods feel similar in hand with the 844C being just a bit more powerful.  The 844C is definitely more sensitive but St.Croix isn't far behind.

If I had to pick, I would go with the 844C unless you want a true heavy rod.  The 844C fits my style of fishing better.
