With the rods I have, and the ones I'm going to order this shopping season...the 16 spot rack I made a couple years ago is gonna run out of room.

 

So, decided to make a new one with more spots, and decided to do it right.

This is phase-1 of the build...side uprights. Yes, there's two there clamped together for drilling/cutting so that they're identical.

 

24 slots in 6' - end of the year I'll have 19 rods...so some room for expansion of my arsenal.

No, this will be a wall-mount...I'm keeping the other one for 'overflow' once I get there....back-up rods and maybe the crappie rigs....that'll be mounted to the ceiling.

I wouldn't have the room to put something like that for mine.  I used 3/4" PVC pipe, some Tee connectors and elbows to make some racks to hang down from the ceiling of my shop just a little over head high.  There are two rows, one on top of the other about 8" apart, 6' wide.  I probably have 40 rods and reels in it.  They are up out of the way and easy enough to just slide them out when I want them.  Most are in rod sleeves so don't have to worry about them getting tangled up.

Ya - the Mark-1 in the garage was just that. The Mark-2 is the 16 slot with through holes on one board, brass hooks on the other. This will be moved to the ceiling in the 'fishing room' for over-flow.

 

I've dedicated a 8.5' x 11' spot in the basement, walled it off - that's the fishing room. During the winter, my gear is stored in there, including all the boat gear that gets pulled out (PFDs, Sonar, batteries, etc)

Well its not quite a boat/trailer rebuild, but it would be tough to top that.

 

I hang my rod and reels to a ceiling mount very similarly to what yours looks like above.

Done, mounted, and filled.

Looking for ideas, as I will be dedicating a small portion of my basement to consolidating my gear.  Right now, it's just stacked up in a corner and on a table.  I'd like to see more detail of your ceiling rack, as that might be the best option.  My only concern would be dust.  I'd also like to be able to store rigs with the reels attached.  Any ideas are welcome.

I'll take some shots of the ceiling rack...when it was in the garage, I left the reels on between trips in the canoe...so it is capable of that.

It's pretty basic

1x8 (what ever wood - nominal is 3/4"x7-1/2")

Rip to 4" and 3-1/2"

On the 4" wide piece, mark first drill spot 1-1/2" from long edge and 1-1/2" from one short edge...rest of holes are marked 1-1/2" from long edge and 3" from previous mark. This will give you 4 spots per 1' of length (mine is a 4', so 16 spots)

Drill holes with 2" hole saw

To back edge, mount some 1x1 so that 6" extends beyond the short edges

On the 3-1/2" wide piece, mark drill spots along the long edge, 1-1/2" from one end and every 3"

Drill pilot holes with 1/16" bit

To back edge, mount some 1x1 so that 6" extends beyond the short edges

 

Paint/stain to your desired color, then seal. I like water-based Spar Urethane for this, but any water based Polyurethane sealer will work.

 

Into the pilot holes on the narrow piece - install small, brass cup hooks

If you want (I did) get some narrow, sticky-back foam an put in the 2" holes on the wide piece.

Drill pilot holes in the 1x1 - 1" from outer end, then 4" in from that.

Mount to ceiling (or wall, the cup hooks work there as well.

I have a rack that is similar to what @MN Fisher looks like, except mine is ceiling mounted.  If you leave enough space in between the individual holders, you can keep the reels on them since gravity will hold them straight downward.
