Driving a beater Has its charms.  I had the roar of a front bearing going bad. Mechanic used a stethoscope and found the front left making noise. I okayed the Repair.  He called.  Oh-o.  He said, “front noise is gone but now I can hear the rear”.    Grrrr.  And he doesn’t have the press to do the rears.  He suggested a differential shop around the corner.   I drove over there.  
 

I made an appt.    Yea I can hear rear bearing noise now.  Very subtle.  I’ll let them suss it out.    This is not an easy job for me.  The new mechanic suggested (strongly) that I do both sides since it’s so involved.  
 

good times.  I hope I get it back by Saturday. I wanna fish   oh well. I pulled all my receipts today.  I’ve been very lucky with this truck.  Very little has failed.  I’m not mad , not mad at all.  

If I had it down for a rear bearing I’d go ahead and do both. Had an old Chevy pickup that loved eating gas gages for some reason. The stock ones anyway. 85 model I think. Finally put an aftermarket gage on it and it lasted until I sold it years later. Yeah, beaters got their charm, alright. ?

I love having vehicles that I have to keep tools in if I'm driving it.  Keeping them going down the road is the best part.

A several years ago, I had a 1970 Chevrolet C-10 pick up with a 250 six cyl. Drove it like she was for years. Decided to do a frame on restoration. Drove it for a few more years, gave it to my son then we sold it to get him a newer car. I wish that we had kept it, so easy to work on. I keep thinking that I'll buy another old truck to drive around.

Not sure what the requirements are for "old" but my current ride is an 05 Silverado Z71 with 150k on it. 

     If I am ever driving to the lake, in a vehicle that is worth more than the rods, reels, and tackle inside, than I need to sell it and buy more tackle.  Any piece of junk can get me to the lake, but the truck, wont help catch the fish.  A friend of mine from Alaska, had an old plane that looked like it barely survived WW2.  Any time someone mentioned the appearance of the plane, he would simply say, paint don't fly the plane. He neve had any pictures, of his house, truck, boat, or plane, but he had albums full with pictures of big fish, and expensive fly rods.

       I quote him often, and believe there is wisdom in his words to live by.  Weather its a plane, car, pickup or boat, paint don't catch the fish.

I'm sure hope my 2020 truck doesn't mind being driven by man that's older, scuffed, scarred, had some parts replaced, needs more work, needs warming up to do most things, and makes strange noises at times.

Old is a relative term. For me, 250K miles on a gasser is my end game, don't care what the age is.

Where I live they rust completely out before 250k unless your religious about washing them constantly or your driving for a living

this is actually a very valid question.  my truck is also a 2006.   212000 miles.  i would hardly call mine "just breaking in".  it is VERY smooth running, and still gets the same MPG.  but it is deep deep into "patina" territory and is totally broken in. 

 

i have the stack of receipts and i went thru some of them yesterday.  it has been pretty trouble free.  i had to change a failed power steering pump, and two wheel bearings went bad 100k miles ago.  that's it.   not to bad since i consider the life i have put it thru.  

Mine has 170k on the V8. Virtually all of my bills have been regular maintenance or stupidity on my part. It’s just been a great vehicle

Thats a cool old truck. I always loved that body style. One of Chevys best IMO. I have a Ford now, but have had a Chevy in the past.

I've owned 7 Mustangs and still have one that I've owned for 34 years.  I have a Harley I've owned for 18 years.  I've owned various Jeep model years from 1948 to 2014.  Right now I have this squarebody Chevy.  I don't play the Ford vs. Chevy vs. Mopar children's game.  I love them all and love to work on all of them.  

If you love to work on them you probably love the Ford’s most then ?

Me neither. IMO, anyone should just drive whatever they want. Honestly, I've had more Toyota trucks than anything. Sounds like you have had some awesome vehicles throughout  the years. Cheers to that.

My very first truck was a green Chevy C 10 exactly like this. 250 inline 6cyl, 3 speed column transmission. I bought it from a farmer for 900 bucks. Very solid good truck. The 250 was still going strong when I sold it with 250,OOO miles on it.
