Can’t decide on a rod.

Featured Replies

I need help picking out a rod. Under 200’dollar range.

Looking for a rod to cast from shore with., with the kids.  Some swim plastics . Maybe to water poppers . Kind of an all around rod.

what do you guys recommend . Was looking into the st croix mojo bass.

see as alot of these bass rods have a fast action.

Swim baits and topwaters…

Dobyns 734c in the the line you can afford. Sierra or Fury to save a little.

Dobyns would be the first place I'd start as well.

For poppers and small paddletails it sounds like it will be used for, I agree with the dobyns, but would suggest the 733 instead of the 734.

Don't get me wrong,.. I have both, and like them both. I just think the 733 works better for those techniques, and can also be used for weightless senkos, flukes, squarebills, and even a jerkbait in a pinch. Love the versatility of my 733s!

Daiwa Tatula ?

spinning or casting?

Dobyns Sierra 703SF or 704/734C depending on the answer to the previous question. Used Champ XPs can be $200 or under on occasion.

1. Dobyns Sierra

2. Daiwa Tatula

3. Falcon Lowrider

dont worry at all.  these guys will tell you exactly what rod you need and maybe 4-5 you dont need but should have, nevertheless.  not including the ones way above your price limit. :D  get ready to pull out your Yen to dollar conversion.

team...GO!

Fast action rods are generally the best all around rods. Poppers and swimming plastics depending on their size I mostly throw on a M/F St. Croix. Normally, I think of a MH/F as the the best do everything type of rod, but if you normally throw smaller baits like that, I'd go with the M/F. I know it's right at the top of the budget, but the Victory line has a 7'1" M/F spinning rod or a 7'1" MH/F that would be a good option, otherwise the Mojo has the M/F or MH/F in both spinning or casting.

What does "with the kids" mean, and how do you see it altering your decision?

Are you saying that your kids might be using it too? If yes:

  • What age are they?
  • What fishing experience do they have?

Guess that means you’re looking for a spinning rod.

I’ve always bought US made St Croix’s which in your and my price range would be a Premier.

I did get just a Dobyns Fury for my grandson that looks real nice, can’t try it out till ice out.

I’m going to recommend the Okuma TCS A 7’-0” medium plus moderate/moderate fast at $165.00. I just got one at Christmas so I haven’t had a chance to use it but I have the same series rod in a 7’-3” heavy/fast and it’s fantastic. I have a cheap rod that I love in the same length and it mirrors the action of the Okuma so I’m confident saying I’m going to love the Okuma.
