St. Croix Triumph Rod — Medium or Medium Light

Featured Replies

I’m debating between getting a 6ft medium or medium light St. Croix Triumph spinning rod. I would use it while on my kayak for finesse fishing for bass. I like a shorter rod while on the river. I might also use it for crappie fishing. The medium light would definitely be better for crappie, but what do you think about finesse fishing for bass? Thanks!

Personally, I prefer a ML for most finesse fishing.

Same here. I’ve got a medium Triumph that hasn’t seen the light of day since I got a ML Avid and Sierra.

I ha a ML triumph and it broke. I bought the next model up and it was so worth the extra money

It broke = I broke it. True defect account s for a very small percentage of breaks. I’ve moved nearly all my spinning to ML rods. Remember the term is subjective though.

Medium light for sure.

Medium light as well.  Also, St. Croix's tend to be a hair stiffer than their rating.  So their medium light should fall between some other brand's medium light and medium.  So it would be a good compromise.

I actually thought the Medium in this line had a very soft tip for a medium but I would still go with a ML if you are wanting a bass/panfish set up. I fish bass on a UL set up often and its a blast. You could even go with a light model. Not sure if Triumph has one but I think premier does.

For a little bit more you can get a bass x. I absolutely love my ml/xf. It is great for finesse up to 1/4ish. You can get away with 3/8oz hair jigs, but thats pushing it.

The Bass X probably has no short 6' in the lineup though. Anyway yes ML in a ST Croix.

I'm in the minority in that I use a med with an xf tip.  Sets the hook better than a lighter rod and I skin hook my finesse worms.

I like a MF or a MLXF. My Bass-X is a MLXF. But it’s 6’10”. Works well out of my inflatable.
