Any Pelican Bass Raider Owners Out There?

Featured Replies

Hello All,  I've been considering getting a Bass Raider 10E, while browsing around last night i noticed a listing for a Sun Dolphin Sportsman 10 listed at Home depot for the same price. Just wondering if anybody would have the pros and cons between the two?

UPDATE!!! SORRY EVERYONE but Photobucket wants me to spend 399 dollars to host my pictures...I just refuse to do that!  You can still check the pics out with this link: http://s709.photobucket.co

  • Picked up my bass raider 3 or 4 months ago and I absolutely love it.  I did a bunch of mods including a casting deck and the deck is rock solid.  It's 3x more stable on my deck than standing in some o

Great, now I spotted a used Pond Prowler within about 1 1/2 hour drive away. More to consider.

That Sun Dolphin 10 looks identical to the new Pond Prowler 10 if you have a Bass Pro close enough to see in person

That looks really nice, I like how you chose to span over the side gunnels for the additional width.  That is much more practical than just making it the width of the chair supports.

Did you need to add any support horizontally for weight & if so, where did you put the cross members?  If I do a deck, I want to create storage space underneath it, but didn't know if the support needed would limit it and/or create the need for deck lids.

It’s just 3/4 inch plywood. It’s really sturdy for now as I just recently built it but I’ve been thinking I should probably put some type of support underneath it. I can jump up and down on it like it is and it doesn’t move but I’m afraid it might weaken in time.

Hello all,

I want to put 1 or 2 drains (front&back) in the inside of my BR10e, to make it easier to remove water from inside the boat. I've read that the floor is higher than water line, so sealing should be easy. Would anyone know how thick the floor is, so I can buy the proper thru-hull or bulkhead fitting?

I am also considering using a 1" ID size fitting for the drain and using the drain as a through point for a shallow water anchor spike. Anyone ever try or accomplish that on their BR?

I just picked up my Pelican Bass Raider 10E last from academy. Looking forward to rigging it up and posting some pics!

How do you have your transducer mounted? I love that set up, might have to try and build something similar

I glued it to the Hull with 3m 5200

how hard is it to control these things? say if you are throwing a crankbait is the boat turning and pulling while you reel? i have a little 10 foot kayak and i get so frustrated, i cant even throw a spinnerbait without re positioning every cast.

Since they weigh less than a full fledged bass boat, it takes less to make these boat turn, however they aren't as bad as a kayak or canoe.  One thing that makes a big difference when throwing moving baits as well as controlling the boat is adding a rudder to the back (when you have the electric in the front).

On my boat, only the deepest diving crankbaits tend to turn my bow a little, everything else has a negligible effect.

Hello,

Enjoyed everyone's contribution to the Forum. Love seeing all the Ideas. I bought a Sun Dolphin Sportsman 8ft recently from Home Depot. They price match anywhere and have free shipping right now. Can't wait for it to come in. Have a small 30lb minn kota to push me around. Ordered a Garmin Striker 4 for it too.

Being New here I've skimmed over most of the Forum and have a question. Has anyone ever tried to use the Scotty transducer mount off the side of the boat? Is it long enough to submerge the transducer?

Also anyone tried making the whole boat a standing platform? No seats just turning it into a motorized stand up paddleboard pretty much? Using the original floor to store things? This is my plan. When its done ill upload some pictures.

Hey guys, Got a few questions about these lil boats.

1) There seems to be a few brands but all look similar except the cockpit layout. Is one better than the other?

2) How stable are they? I want to do some stand up spin fishing and some fly fishing. Im getting old and wobbly :annoyed1:

I got a bass boat now but I've always seen these things and thought they would be awesome for small ponds and places where gas motors are not allowed.

Thanks

What’s the wire gauge size for the pre wired pelicans?

the TM I have comes with a lead of 6 gauge, I think the pelican is 8 but can’t find confirmation anywhere.

I just want to make sure I got the right size but connector to put the TM to the pre wired plug

Also has anyone found a good way to patch the ram x material?  I’ve tried it all with no luck, finally just ordered a plastic welder to try that.

They are very stable. I can jump up and down on the edge of mine. It would take a huge wave to turn it over

As was mentioned, very stable for the areas these types of boats were designed for. This will be my 3rd season with the Pelican 10E and I love it. Allows me to get into some real remote, shallow areas that I would not otherwise be able to access.

That’s not 6 gauge wire, I don’t have mine anymore but I believe it was 12 gauge. Might be 10 but I don’t think so. Even if you buy a plug that’s a different gauge it will still work, just solder and heat shrink your connections.

Never soldered before.  Would a butt connector crimped with shrink wrap work?

Probably but soldering is super easy. I’m sure you could find something on YouTube. They make butt connectors for exterior applications, probably the best bet if you can find them easily.

I believe I saw one picture of a Pond Prowler done like that.  I would think the only problem with that is it would be a bit awkward to reach over the side to either land a fish or grab something off the surface or just under the water.  With a raised platform on the just the front, you can still sit on the edge of the platform (feet on the lower section) and reach easily over the side of the boat.  Think of when guys land fish on full size bass boats, they leave the front deck & go back to the sunken cockpit to reach into the water.

As long as you aren't getting passed by full sized boats making full sized wakes, they are very stable.  Having a plywood subfloor increases the stability (and carpeting it increases the comfort when standing).

I'll stand when fishing jerkbaits or skipping docks, but once I hook up and begin fighting the fish, I'll plop my butt back in the seat.  It is convenient to be sitting, fighting a fish and then just reach over & land them without having to move from where you are.

I'm getting ready to buy my second bass raider.....going with the 10ft this time.  Trying to decide between a 40 or 50lb endura motor.  I realize the 40 is enough, but I go out all day and usually venture far.  Scooting back to the ramp fast with a 50lb thrust sounds appealing.  However, I am curious if even though I generally stick to speeds 1 or two mostly during the day if the larger motor will drain my battery too soon. Thoughts?

I used a 40 lb endura the first year I used my pond prowler. It worked fine unless the wind was blowing. I fish in a pretty big lake and when the water got choppy it felt like I was barely moving. A few months ago I bought a 55 lb variable speed endura Maxx. It only moves the boat 1/2 mph faster but it cuts through the water a lot better on those windy days. I don't notice any more battery drain since I switched but the variable speed is supposed to have less battery drain.

I have the 55 lb variable speed endura Maxx as well. The variable speed is more efficient as you dial exactly what you need and are not stuck with preset speeds that may be too fast or too slow. I load the boat down with two 200 plus guys plus battery and gear so I went with the strongest 12v trolling motor and my group size 21 battery matches and last a full outing when fully charged. We get just over 4 MPH fully open when water is not choppy but typically are trolling on very low speeds to hold spots or move slowly along the shore.

Just my 2 cents...
