With all the rough fish out there, this Osprey bags a Smallie. I feel cheated! 1

It really is quite beautiful how perfectly nature balances itself if we don't put our footprint down to heavily on it. Your awesome pond and sanctuary I'm sure allows you to see this everyday you walk outside. The circle of life is scary and awe inspiring all at the same time.

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted July 10, 2023 Global Moderator Share Posted July 10, 2023 Cool! Although I bet it could take off, I’ve seen an Osprey carrying a tree branch about 10 feet long as big around as my arm

I have seen them grab a big sucker before and have to swim to shore with it. I think the bird in my video is a juvenile based on its coloring (hard to tell in the video, but easy in real life) which may not be as strong of a flyer.
softwateronly
Ospreys moved into my lake area a few years back, and I've been lucky to be right there on multiple successful hunts. The violence is awe inspiring and eye opening in real life. I didn't know what I didn't know till I witnessed it. scott
GRiver
I never get tired of see that…. Thanks for sharing. Had a nest not far from my house, watched mom and pops raise their family for two years in a row, storm came and took the tee top out…. Glad it was off season for them. Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted July 11, 2023 Global Moderator Share Posted July 11, 2023 Ospreys fishing reminded me : I was in florida once and saw ospreys diving like crazy. I paddled over and started bombing all kinds of lures and caught nothing, eventually realized that it was an adult bird teaching it’s offspring how to dive into the water, they weren’t catching anything either

So true Alex, I used to worry the herons away but over time I came to realize that they are a part of this same as me. Now I have come to appreciate my resident Blue Heron (Harold), and understand that what he does is natural and necessary. However, I will continue to chase away otters. They got Maggie, my 5-3 LM. That was heartbreaking. Fortunately, they only come by in the winter and since I blocked the under the dock access, they don't stay long.
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted July 11, 2023 Global Moderator Share Posted July 11, 2023 It’s a good thing we don’t control the ecosystem, humans just can’t help but pick favorites

As an angler I'm guilty of this certainly, a Bass is so far superior to other FW gamefish in my mind, but I know a Wallhead is the same way to some guy living up north. Not really picking favorites when it comes to ponds and Otters though, they'll kill every last fish if they can. Nothing eco about that ? Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted July 11, 2023 Global Moderator Share Posted July 11, 2023 Some people probably like otters more than fish haha. And the list goes on and on……..
